A Chianti Classico Gran Selezione imbued with elegance and complexity
The estate
Founded in the 1670s by four Roman families, Castello di Ama has established itself as an essential benchmark for Chianti Classico in Tuscany. Based in the commune of Gaiole in Chianti, the estate farms 75 hectares of vineyards between 430 and 520 meters above sea level, on exceptional limestone soils. Under the leadership of oenologist Marco Pallanti and Lorenza Sebasti, CEO since 1988, Castello di Ama revolutionized the region by cementing the concept of cru as early as the 1980s. The estate has also stood out with L'Apparita, a merlot that has become a global reference, and received the title of Cantina dell'Anno in 2005.
The vineyard
This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione comes from the historic vineyards of Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo and Montebuoni, located in the heart of the appellation. The vines are planted between 460 and 525 meters above sea level on clay-limestone soils, with northeast and southwest exposures. Planting density ranges from 2,800 to 5,500 vines per hectare, and the vines are trained with vertical trellising using the single Guyot system.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage was marked by dry conditions from June to mid-August, before life-saving rains arrived on August 15. Merlot harvesting began on September 12, followed by sangiovese from September 20 to October 4, making it possible to pick grapes at optimal ripeness.
Vinification and aging
Vinification of San Lorenzo Gran Selezione 2022 is carried out with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks between 30° and 33°C. Skin maceration lasts 24 days for sangiovese and merlot, and 25 days for malvasia nera. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels. Aging lasts around 12 months in fine-grain oak barrels, 20% of which are new. Bottling was carried out in June 2024.
