The Vibrant Expression of an Exceptional Limestone Terroir in Saint-Émilion
The estate
Founded in 1781 by the Dubois-Challon family, Château Ausone is an iconic landmark of Bordeaux. Located on the famous limestone ridge of the appellation, this Premier Grand Cru Classé A stands out for its rarity and uncompromising standards. Owned by the Vauthier family since 1909, this seven-hectare estate jealously safeguards its integrity, producing cuvées of remarkable complexity.
The vineyard
Nestled at the southern entrance of the village of Saint-Émilion, this micro-vineyard of 7.25 hectares thrives on a plateau and steeply sloping hillsides. The terroir benefits from a rare geology, composed of clay-limestone soils with starfish fossils and pure limestone, providing perfect drainage. The vines, averaging 57 years old with planting densities ranging from 8,000 to 12,600 vines per hectare, receive meticulous attention. Currently undergoing conversion to organic farming, the estate practises extremely precise plot-by-plot management.
The vintage
The season was marked by a hot, dry climate, producing small berries with thick skins. These conditions favoured natural concentration while preserving a beautiful acidity at full maturity. An early heatwave at the end of June profoundly shaped the identity of this year. In response to these atypical weather conditions, micro-adjustments were made throughout the growing cycle. The harvest took place from 2 to 12 September for the Merlot, from 15 to 18 September for the Cabernet Franc, and concluded on 23 September with the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes are hand-harvested into small crates before undergoing rigorous sorting, both densimetric and manual. The vinification of this Château Ausone 2025 is carried out on a plot-by-plot basis in small wooden vats, with gentle extraction by gravity. Ageing then takes place in the estate's underground cellars for 20 months, exclusively in new oak barrels.
Grape varieties
This wine is made from a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
