A Fruity, Fresh Red Côtes du Rhône from Beaucastel's Rolled Pebble Terroir
The Estate
Château de Beaucastel, located in Courthézon in the Rhône Valley, north of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, dates back to 1549, when Pierre de Beaucastel acquired a barn and land at Coudoulet. In 1909, Pierre Tramier purchased the estate, which then passed to his son-in-law Pierre Perrin. Owned by the Perrin family, it is now run by Jean-Pierre and François Perrin, representatives of the fourth generation, with the involvement of the fifth. A pioneer of organic farming and then biodynamics in the region, the estate cultivates all 13 grape varieties permitted in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The Vineyard
This Côtes du Rhône appellation wine comes from a vineyard located just east of Beaucastel, on the other side of the A7 motorway. It lies right on the edge of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation area, of which it is not part. The estate describes soils of the same nature as those of Beaucastel: Miocene marine molasse covered with an Alpine diluvium of rolled pebbles. These pebbles store heat during the day and release it at night, which encourages early budbreak in spring and even ripening of the grapes.
The Vintage
The 2024 year was a complex one climatically and required constant vigilance in the vineyards. The harvest, an early one, began around ten days earlier than average, first for the white varieties and then for the reds, and finished in October. It took place in very good conditions, with cool temperatures that made night harvesting unnecessary. Yields are considered reasonable.
Vinification and Ageing
For this Coudoulet de Beaucastel 2024, each grape variety is hand-harvested separately, then sorted and destemmed. Maceration is traditional and takes place in vats. Pressing is carried out with pneumatic presses. Each grape variety then completes its malolactic fermentation, after which the wines are blended. Ageing takes place in oak foudres.
Grape Varieties
Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault.
