The Timeless Elegance of a Great Pessac-Léognan Cru
The Estate
With a vineyard whose land was already recognized in local archives as far back as 1461 for its outstanding quality for vine growing, Château Haut-Bailly enjoys a prestigious heritage. Elevated to the rank of Cru Classé des Graves in 1953, Château Haut-Bailly opened a new chapter in its history when it was acquired by Robert G. Wilmers in 1998. A passionate lover of Bordeaux and its wines, this great patron and devotee of French culture worked alongside his wife to perpetuate the historical heritage of Château Haut-Bailly while bringing an innovative and modern vision to elevate the cru to the highest level, until his passing in December 2017. Managing Director of the estate, Véronique Sanders, together with technical director Gabriel Vialard, oversees this emblematic Cru Classé of the Bordeaux region with talent and passion.
The Vineyard
Planted on one of the highest crests of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the vineyard rests on a mosaic of soils blending gravel and clay, with a subsoil rich in marine sediments. This topography ensures optimal natural drainage. The estate notably shelters a precious four-hectare parcel planted in 1905. Vineyard management combines tradition with respect for the environment: tilled soils, no chemical herbicides, High Environmental Value certification, and an approach incorporating organic farming and biodynamics on a portion of the parcels.
The Vintage
The year began with a mild and rainy winter, ideal for replenishing the soil's water reserves. Spring proved particularly early and consistent, fostering a very regular budburst and flowering. From the end of June, hot and dry weather settled in for an extended period, bringing vine growth to a sharp halt. While the first half of August was marked by water stress and intense heat, the vineyard withstood these conditions perfectly thanks to the deep rooting of its old vines. Finally, a saving rainfall of about 30 millimeters, free of destructive storms, ideally revived the final stage of ripening before plot-by-plot harvesting began on September 4.
Vinification and Aging
To craft Château Haut-Bailly 2025, the berries underwent separate vinification in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats. The teams favored gentle extraction and maceration to preserve the purity of the fruit. The wine then benefited from meticulous aging over 16 months, carried out in French oak barrels sourced from seven different coopers, with a proportion of 50% new wood.
Grape Varieties
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.
