Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Château Latour 2014
Tasting
Colour
This Château Latour 2014 reveals a dark garnet, almost black colour, with deep reflections that testify to its impressive concentration. With time, it opens towards ruby and garnet hues at the rim, while retaining its brilliance and clarity.
Nose
The nose of this Pauillac is complex and evolving, blending notes of blackcurrant, plum and dark fruits with more floral and spicy touches: violet, liquorice, sweet tobacco and dried mint. Nuances of graphite, forest floor and smoke enrich this refined bouquet, which gains even more depth with aeration.
Palate
On the palate, this wine unfolds a dense yet extremely refined tannic structure, carried by a lively acidity that brings tension and energy. Flavours of black and red fruits mingle with touches of tobacco, sweet spices and graphite, in a slender and precise construction, more focused on finesse than on raw power. The long, energetic finish confirms the great quality of this vintage.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine will pair ideally with red meats or game, as well as slow-cooked dishes with deep flavours, capable of matching the wine's tannic structure and aromatic complexity.
Serving and Ageing
This wine will benefit from being decanted before tasting in order to fully reveal the richness of its bouquet. It is ideally served at around 16 to 18°C, a temperature that favours the expression of its structure and aromas.
A Pauillac Defined by Finesse and Freshness
The Estate
Château Latour is a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Pauillac, owned by Groupe Artemis, the holding company of the Pinault family, since 1993. The estate, whose vineyard extends over approximately 96.5 hectares, distinguished itself in 2018 by becoming the first Premier Grand Cru Classé of the Médoc to be certified organic. Located on the Left Bank of the Garonne, in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards, this estate embodies the excellence of Bordeaux winegrowing. The estate has also chosen to no longer sell its wines en primeur, preferring to offer them once they have reached a first stage of maturity in bottle.
The Vineyard
Coming from the old vines of the Enclos, the historic heart of the estate in Pauillac, this wine comes from clayey gravel soils over a subsoil of marly clay overlooking the Gironde estuary. This proximity to the water gives the terroir a particular microclimate, tempering climatic extremes and promoting steady ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate's dominant grape variety.
The Vintage
The 2014 vintage was characterised by a rather cool growing season and late ripening, particularly favourable in the northern Médoc. The harvest ran from 18 September to 15 October, with the Merlots picked first, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignons between 6 and 15 October, allowing each plot to reach full maturity.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Grand Vin of this estate comes from a rigorous selection of the best plots of the Enclos, representing only around 33.9% of the estate's total production that year. This drastic selection makes it possible to concentrate in this wine the grapes offering the finest expression of the terroir and the greatest ageing potential.
Grape Varieties
This wine is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
