A wine from Moulis combining power and finesse
The estate
Founded in 1875 by J. Petit-Laroche, Château Maucaillou is located in Moulis-en-Médoc, between Margaux and Saint-Julien, on a gravelly terroir well suited to viticulture. Acquired by the Dourthe family in 1929, the estate expanded to 32 hectares under Roger Dourthe. Philippe Dourthe, an oenologist, led the estate until 2013, when his children took over.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Château Maucaillou spans 72 hectares within the Moulis appellation. The vines benefit from the gravelly soil typical of the Médoc, providing natural drainage and heat reflection, essential elements for the optimal ripening of the grapes.
The vintage
The 2024 vintage was marked by record rainfall from October 2023 to May 2024, accompanied by milder than normal temperatures. Spring brought significant disease pressure, followed by a hot and dry summer. A hailstorm just before the harvest complicated matters, but the decision to let the Cabernet Sauvignon ripen longer proved beneficial, allowing optimal phenolic maturity to be achieved.
Winemaking and aging
Traditional vinification in temperature-controlled vats, separately for each grape variety. Daily pump-overs are carried out during alcoholic fermentation to extract colour and aromas. Transfer to barrel takes place after tasting, approximately four weeks after the start of fermentation. Aging continues in French oak barrels (30% new, 40% one-wine, 30% two-wine).
Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), Merlot (20%) and Petit Verdot (2%).
