Château Meyney 2022

Still restrained, with depth and nobility, mineral-driven, plenty of dark cherry fruit, cassis, violets; balanced on the palate, dense, compact, razor-sharp tannins, incredibly crisp, fresh, juicy and long. An excellent Meyney—at this price, a MUST BUY!

Gently singed bay and dried lilac notes infuse a core of bitter plum and dark cherry compote, with a wet stone accent. The lightly chalky structure underscores the focused finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2037. 8,000 cases made.

Ripe brambleberry fruit aromas on the nose. Rich and filling on the palate, this has a nice texture of crushed blue fruit pulp, fleshy and chewy with cool cola and liquorice accents. The oak feels a little prominent in the softly drying tannins and cedar spice on the finish which gives this a subtle sense of opulence. Full bodied and full of flavour.

The 2022 Meyney has a more flattering, perhaps flamboyant bouquet than the Tronquoy, though it is just as well defined, the fruit a little richer and fuller. The palate is medium-bodied but with assertive tannins, layered red and black fruit laced with white pepper and allspice. Quite rounded on the finish, where it succeeds is in maintaining delineation and not going gung-ho. This Meyney may well be meliorating in bottle... one to watch. Black cherries, espresso, and flowers define the perfume here. The palate, with its rich, lush, round layers of ripe dark fruits and chocolate, is further enhanced by marine influences on the finish, and a touch of mint that adds freshness to the finish and endnotes. This should age quite nicely. Drink from 2026-2045.

Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening at the rim. Black forest berries, blackberries and liquorice, tobacco spice, some nougat. Full-bodied, round and complex, dark nougat, supportive tannins, good length, chocolatey mineral finish.

Well-balanced ripe red fruits, creamy without being overly exuberant, with tomato leaf and rosebud interwoven with damson and red cherry. Good stuff, one to share.

Dark and beguiling on the nose, this wine reveals a deep character of dark red fruit before releasing brighter bursts of tangy cranberry and rose petal. On the palate, it is pure, precise, and sensual. The fruit—generous, fresh, perfectly ripe—is wrapped in a delicate veil of fine cocoa for an endless finish.

The nose is aromatic, mentholated at first, with distinct notes of black fruits and their tangy edge (blackcurrant, morello cherry, wild blackberry). It also shows notes of red cherry, crushed raspberry, tangy strawberry, menthol, dried peppermint, pine needles, liquorice, even a hint of star anise, fresh flowers (lilac, rose, violet), as well as elegant, subtle toasted and chocolatey touches (dark chocolate, toasted hazelnut, fresh almond, a hint of fresh wood, subtle and enveloping). The palate is firm but not dry, well-built, offering straightness, accuracy, precision, and a fine tannin grain. The attack opens on black-fruit flavours (blackcurrant, morello cherry, wild blackberry), complemented by a background touch of bird cherry with a hint of bitterness. Then come toasted notes (hazelnut, bitter almond, cocoa) and spices (liquorice, star anise). The finish is mouthwatering, tangy, solid, fairly ripe, toasted and chocolatey. Indulgent, with a refined, airy side.

Deep, intense, beautiful colour. An intense, subtle nose with very ripe fruit. Broad on the attack, rich through the mid-palate and subtle in its flavours, both caressing and powerful, the wine finishes long and very tasty, with lovely length and well-integrated tannins.

The tannic structure, most noticeable on the finish, promises longevity and freshness. With a deep, brilliant garnet hue, it delivers a refined bouquet—polish, raspberry, strawberry coulis, gingerbread—with a supple mid-palate, chased by an explosion of spices on the finish.

93-95 Barrel sample. Dense blackberry fruits go along with the rich tannins. The spicy wood flavors are a layer under the fine fruits. It has a future of ripe tannins and black fruits.

The 2022 Meyney has turned out very well, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, bay leaf and pencil shavings, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, supple and fleshy palate that’s rich and seamless, exhibiting a tannin integration that can’t always be taken for granted at this address. In fact, this appears to be the best Meyney produced for quite some time, and it’s well worth seeking out.
