Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Château Villemaurine 2025
Tasting
Color
This wine reveals a dark, particularly deep hue, characteristic of the great crus from this limestone terroir.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of ripe dark fruit and black cherry, enhanced by a touch of bitter orange zest. More complex nuances of toasted wood, smoke, liquorice, espresso and chocolate enrich this dark, elegant profile.
Palate
The attack is silky and refined, offering a velvety, tender texture. The richness of the fruit is perfectly balanced by a mineral freshness on the palate. The finish stands out with pronounced acidity and remarkably fine tannins, carrying the wine to a remarkable length.
Food and wine pairing
This cuvée will pair wonderfully with tender red meats, such as a roast rack of lamb flavored with herbes de Provence or a beef fillet served with wild mushrooms. When it comes to cheese, an aged Comté or a Laguiole will perfectly highlight its elegant structure.
Serving and cellaring
To fully enjoy this wine, serving it at a temperature of around 15.5°C is ideal.
Other characteristics
This wine has an alcohol content of 14% vol. and a pH of 3.49.
The pure expression of a great Saint-Émilion terroir
The estate
Located in the renowned Bordeaux region, Château Villemaurine is a historic estate whose name dates back to the Moorish era. Today, this prestigious property is run by Marie-Bénédicte and Christophe Lefévère, who became its current owners in April 2021. They passionately carry on the excellence of this seven-hectare cru. The estate boasts an exceptional geological asset: a vast network of underground quarries stretching beneath the vines, providing a perfect, natural environment for aging the wines.
The vineyard
Covering a production area of 7.30 hectares, the vineyard lies on the famous asteria limestone plateau, east of the medieval town of Saint-Émilion. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, thrive on clay-limestone soils. Vineyard management follows environmentally friendly practices, including mechanical soil work, no use of herbicides, and meticulous manual interventions such as bud thinning and leaf removal. This environmental commitment is further confirmed by HVE4 and SME certifications.
The vintage
The year began under the best auspices, with a very healthy spring followed by a particularly hot and dry summer. These climatic conditions favored rapid and remarkably even ripening of the berries. Thanks to early and strategic harvesting, the grapes retained great freshness while reaching optimal phenolic maturity.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes were hand-harvested in small crates, followed by a thorough double sorting, both manual and by density. After gravity-fed transfer into temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and wooden casks, vinification was punctuated by pumping-over and punching down. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrels. Aging was then carried out using 50% new French oak barrels, 30% small wooden casks and 20% once-used barrels.
Grape varieties
The blend of this wine is made up of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
