Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

This wine named for a Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route is ripe and spicy. Its solid, dry core is balanced by the black fruit and concentration. With time, the wine will lighten up to showcase the rich fruits and good supporting structure. Wait until the wine matures, in 2022.

Red fruit aromas, a hint of toasty oak, then a gentle, smooth palate with polished tannins and good lift. Easygoing with the limestone freshness apparent, but it lacks an edge of density and volume.

The 2016 Côtes de Montpezat Cuvée Compostelle has an attractive nose of blackberry, bilberry and light marine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, a smooth texture and quite a sensual, prolonged finish. This is very promising.

The 2016 Château Cote Montpezat Cuvée Compostelle (75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc) is ruby/purple-colored and has a classic limestone-driven bouquet of black raspberries, white truffles, tobacco leaf, and damp earth. With medium body, moderate tannins, and good depth of fruit, it's a high-quality charmer to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years.

Garnet red with violet highlights. A multifaceted bouquet, fruity and spicy. The attack is juicy and lively, two qualities that carry through the entire palate. I love this wine’s freshness and pedigree. It also has tannins with enough substance to match the structure’s lively character. A wine that fully embraces its primary purpose: it’s made to be enjoyed!

The nose is indulgent, fairly refined and quite elegant, offering power and a subtle concentration. It reveals toasted notes along with delicate hints of blackberry and blackcurrant, complemented by fine touches of strawberry, caramelised oak and cardamom. The palate is fruity, juicy and well-balanced, delivering deliciousness, a fleshy texture and a fine mineral framework. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy blackberry and plum, alongside delicate notes of fresh strawberry and fresh raspberry, as well as a discreet touch of crushed blueberry, toastiness and a hint of blond tobacco. The tannins are well managed. Good length. The finish is deliciously persistent.

Description

A red wine from Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux with a beautiful acidity

The Cuvée Compostelle of Château Côte Montpezat is a red wine produced in the appellation of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. 35 to 40 years old on average, the vineyard of 29 hectares enjoys a terroir consisting of clay and limestone soils. The ageing of the wine is carried out for 12 months, half in new barrels and half in vats. The 2016 vintage blends 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

At tasting, the Cuvée Compostelle 2016 of the Château Côte Montpezat reveals a pretty, dark ruby colour. The nose reveals complex aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant), along with vanilla and chocolate fragrances. On the palate, the acidity is superb and the tannins are silky and fruity. Wonderful length. The woodiness, resulting from production, is present but develops superbly in barrel.
