Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the 2025 Saint-Joseph from Domaine Courbis
Tasting
Colour
The colour shows a deep, intense hue tending towards purple, dense and profound, the signature of a fully ripe Syrah.
Nose
The nose unfolds with aromas of lightly stewed red fruits – raspberry, cherry and strawberry – enhanced by notes of violet and a touch of pepper.
Palate
On the palate, this wine is both powerful and supple, driven by a lovely fruity intensity and a spicy touch that extends into an elegant finish.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red Saint-Joseph pairs beautifully with a chicken tagine with aubergines, a duck magret or a rib of beef, making it an excellent match for flavourful meats and lightly spiced dishes.
Serving and Cellaring
The 2025 Saint-Joseph from Domaine Courbis is ideally served at a temperature of around 17°C, in order to fully reveal the freshness of its fruit and the finesse of its tannins.
A Red Saint-Joseph from Domaine Courbis, an Expression of Southern Syrah
The Estate
Domaine Courbis has been established since the 16th century in Châteaubourg, in the Ardèche, in the heart of the northern Rhône Valley. Long devoted to mixed farming, the estate refocused on viticulture in the middle of the 20th century under the impetus of Maurice Courbis, before his sons Laurent and Dominique took over its management in the late 1980s. Today the owners and managers of Domaine Courbis, the two brothers farm more than forty hectares spread across Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Saint-Péray and Crozes-Hermitage, in complete independence and without recourse to the négociant trade.
The Vineyard
Coming from the southernmost point of the Saint-Joseph appellation, this wine comes from plots located about six kilometres from Tournon-sur-Rhône, at the confluence of the Isère and the Rhône, on the 45th parallel. The terroir combines around 70% granitic soils and 30% clay-limestone soils, giving the Syrah a anchoring that is both mineral and structuring. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, are grown on slopes that call for essentially manual work.
Winemaking and Ageing
The winemaking of the 2025 Saint-Joseph from Domaine Courbis relies on complete destemming of the grapes, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks, with a maceration of two to four weeks. Ageing then continues for nine to ten months, with one third in tank and two thirds in barrels of two to five wines, for a gentle structuring of the tannins without excessive oak influence.
Grape Variety
This wine is made from 100% Syrah, the emblematic grape variety of the Saint-Joseph appellation.
