Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the IGP Vaucluse 2013 from Domaine Gourt de Mautens
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a deep red hue with garnet highlights.
Nose
The nose reveals great aromatic complexity, led by ripe black fruits such as black cherry, blackberry and plum. Secondary notes of black pepper, liquorice, cocoa, tobacco and leather enrich the bouquet, alongside subtle herbaceous nuances.
Palate
On the palate, the wine unfolds with impressive concentration and fine complexity. Its silky texture and perfectly integrated tannins bring structure and elegance without any harshness. The palate shows remarkable density, with flavours of ripe fruit and spice that carry through to a long, persistent finish with peppery accents.
Food and wine pairing
This wine is an ideal match for refined small game dishes such as stuffed rabbit, shoulder of lamb or braised meats in sauce. It also pairs beautifully with mature cheeses and beef daube.
Serving and ageing
We recommend decanting the Domaine Gourt de Mautens 2013 for one to two hours before serving to allow its aromas to express themselves fully. The ideal serving temperature is between 16 and 18°C. This wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve until around 2033.
A powerful, complex Rhône Valley wine from biodynamic farming
The estate
Domaine Gourt de Mautens was founded in 1996 by Jérôme Bressy, then aged 23, who took over the family vines that his father Yves had converted to organic farming as early as 1989. Located in Rasteau in the Rhône Valley, the estate covers around 13 to 15 hectares of vines. Owner and winegrower Jérôme Bressy has farmed the vineyard biodynamically, with Demeter certification, since 2008. The estate stands out for its commitment to preserving old grape varieties and ampelographic diversity, favouring the authentic expression of its terroir over appellation status.
The vineyard
Although located in Rasteau, the vineyard is classified as IGP Vaucluse, a deliberate choice that allows the free use of old and co-planted grape varieties. The plots lie at an altitude of 220 metres on clay-limestone marl soils. The vines, more than two-thirds of which are between 50 and 100 years old, are gobelet-trained using traditional methods. The mixed orientation of the plots, half facing south-west and half north-west, delivers both ripeness and freshness. Exceptionally low yields of between 10 and 15 hl/ha result from the combination of old vines, poor soils and rigorous biodynamic practices.
The vintage
The 2013 vintage enjoyed contrasting weather conditions in the Rhône Valley. After a mild winter, spring saw a few cool spells before a hot, sunny summer. These conditions allowed the grapes to ripen optimally, promoting aromatic concentration and complexity in the wines.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes for the Domaine Gourt de Mautens 2013 are harvested by hand and undergo a triple sorting process: in the vineyard, at the end of each row and on arrival at the winery. They are vinified as whole bunches in truncated conical oak vats, with fermentation carried out by indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 24 to 36 months in French oak demi-muids and foudres. It is neither fined nor filtered before bottling, thus preserving all of its natural complexity.
Grape varieties
Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Terret Noir.
