Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Morgon 2023 Domaine Louis Claude Desvignes

Tasting

Colour
This French red wine reveals a deep garnet hue, reflecting a beautiful concentration.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with scents of black cherry and violet. It then evolves towards delicate floral nuances, underpinned by a mineral backbone reminiscent of granite.

Palate
The palate offers a fleshy texture with a lovely concentration of fruit, perfectly balanced by refreshing acidity. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, leading to a long, fresh and mineral finish.

Food and wine pairing

Ideal with pork-based dishes or mushroom recipes, this wine also pairs wonderfully with a rib of beef, an osso buco, or roasted poultry. Vegetarian dishes such as mushroom risotto or vegetable lasagna will complement it just as well.

Service and storage

For an optimal tasting experience of this Morgon 2023, it is recommended to decant it fifteen to twenty minutes before serving at a temperature between 15 and 17°C. This wine can be enjoyed now, but it will continue to develop favourably until around 2033.

The elegance and mineral complexity of a Morgon wine

The estate

Officially founded in 1722, Domaine Louis Claude Desvignes is a true institution within the Beaujolais vineyards. Today, siblings Claude-Emmanuelle and Louis-Benoît Desvignes run the estate, representing the eighth generation to cultivate these family lands. They succeeded their father and continue a philosophy centred on respect for the terroir. The estate, which spans approximately 14 hectares, stands out for its organic certification obtained in 2021 and its commitment to bottling its entire production.

The vineyard

Located in the commune of Villié-Morgon, the vineyard flourishes at an average altitude of 310 metres. The vines, around 70 years old, are planted on complex soils composed of iron oxide-rich clay, schist and, above all, decomposed granite, typical of the Morgon appellation. The estate favours organic farming with meticulous soil management, using small tractors or manual interventions to preserve soil structure and biodiversity.

The vintage

The year began with a rather mild winter, followed by a cool, rainy spring that provided excellent conditions for flowering. May and June brought adequate rainfall. Summer was marked by alternating periods of heat and drought, interspersed with cooler, wetter spells. Despite hailstorms in July, the vines withstood them before benefiting from a heatwave in mid-August, allowing for simultaneous and optimal ripening of the berries.

Winemaking and aging

To craft this Morgon 2023, the grapes are harvested by hand, followed by rigorous sorting. Vinification is carried out on a plot-by-plot basis with a traditional semi-carbonic maceration lasting ten to fifteen days. Depending on the cuvée, the bunches may be partially or fully destemmed. The wine is then aged in concrete vats on fine lees for seven to ten months, preserving the pure expression of the fruit and terroir, before light filtration prior to bottling.

Grape variety

100% Gamay.
