Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Mambourg Grand cru 2023 from Domaine Marcel Deiss
Tasting
Appearance
This white wine is clear and brilliant, with pale highlights.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is strikingly complex. It offers alluring notes of ripe yellow fruit, interwoven with hints of minerality, beeswax and white flowers, along with subtle aromas of toasted grain.
Palate
The attack reveals a round texture and an enveloping richness. This wine shows remarkable power, supported by a tannic structure that is surprising for a white. The finish, lengthened by the freshness of the limestone terroir, ends on a delicate touch of lemon and a mouthwatering sensation.
Food and wine pairings
This fine gastronomic wine will pair beautifully with free-range poultry in a cream sauce, mushroom dishes or a well-aged cheese such as a mature Comté.
Serving and cellaring
To reveal its full complexity, decanting this wine before serving is recommended. Built for long ageing, this Mambourg Grand cru 2023 can be cellared and will drink well until around 2043.
Other characteristics
This wine stands out for its perfectly dry profile. Fermentations are carried through to completion, leaving no perceptible residual sugar and highlighting the terroir's natural tension.
The power and complexity of a great white wine from Alsace Grand Cru
The estate
Founded in 1947 in Bergheim, at the heart of the Alsace Wine Route, Domaine Marcel Deiss is an essential benchmark. This 32-hectare family vineyard is now run by Mathieu Deiss, with the support of his father, Jean-Michel. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture and agroforestry, the estate is known for its distinctive philosophy of co-planting. By favouring the authentic expression of terroir over that of a single grape variety, the estate crafts wines of place, renowned for their complexity and strong identity.
The vineyard
The Grand Cru Mambourg overlooks the village of Sigolsheim in Alsace. Facing due south, this vast and very early-ripening slope enjoys optimal sunshine. The estate's vines, planted in 1992 at a high density of 12,700 vines per hectare, thrive on complex soils of Oligocene limestone, magnesium and rolled pebbles. This warm, free-draining terroir is farmed with great rigour, following certified organic and biodynamic principles (Demeter and Ecocert), with deliberately limited yields.
Vinification and ageing
After meticulous hand harvesting, the grapes for this Mambourg Grand cru 2023 are whole-bunch pressed to ensure a very gentle extraction. Fermentations begin naturally with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for an extended period of twelve months on its fine lees in used barrels, which gives it its distinctive patina and texture without marking it with new oak aromas.
Grape varieties
This wine comes from a co-planted vineyard bringing together the entire Pinot family: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Beurot.
