Tasting Notes and Serving Tips for Belle Leone 2013 from Domaine Peyre Rose
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a deep red hue with intense highlights.
Nose
The nose unveils remarkable aromatic complexity, with notes of black plum and dark cherry. Aromas of garrigue express themselves elegantly, accompanied by touches of tobacco, leather, and licorice. Nuances of cocoa, coffee, and smoke add an additional tertiary dimension.
Palate
On the palate, this wine displays a powerful, concentrated structure, with dense, muscular substance. The silky, well-integrated tannins reflect extended aging. The aromatic range continues with flavors of garrigue, coffee, and spices mingling with black fruit. The finish stands out for its lingering length and pleasant freshness, bringing balance despite the concentration.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs perfectly with hearty red meats such as rib steak, tournedos, or game. It also matches well with white fish prepared with Mediterranean seasonings or olive-oil-based sauces. Blue cheeses make a remarkable pairing, as do preparations featuring black olive tapenade or truffles. More daringly, this wine can accompany chocolate or caramel desserts.
Serving and cellaring
Belle Leone 2013 can be enjoyed now. Decanting for one hour allows its aromatic complexity to fully unfold. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 16 to 18°C.
A Vin de France Driven by Syrah and the Terroir of Saint-Pargoire
The estate
Founded in 1988, Domaine Peyre Rose spans 25 hectares of vineyards on the heights of Saint-Pargoire, between Béziers and Montpellier, in the Languedoc. Marlène Soria, owner and winegrower since the very beginning, still runs the estate with a philosophy firmly focused on quality. A pioneer of organic farming in the region, she made the bold choice to favor Syrah and adopt non-interventionist winemaking methods. The estate stands out for its unique practice of extended maturation before release, with wines aged between four and ten years prior to going to market. This uncompromising standard has propelled Peyre Rose among the most recognized producers in Languedoc-Roussillon.
The vineyard
This Vin de France comes from plots located on the Plateau de Peyrals, at an altitude between 200 and 220 meters. The vines rest on clay-limestone soils covered with a stony layer that promotes natural drainage. The vineyard benefits from a Mediterranean microclimate tempered by the Mistral and Tramontane winds, which bring valuable nighttime freshness to preserve the grapes’ natural acidity. Surrounded by wild garrigue made up of lavender, thyme, and rosemary, the vineyard enjoys natural protection against external contamination. Yields are deliberately limited to around 20 hectoliters per hectare to ensure optimal concentration of aromas.
Vinification and aging
Vinification of Belle Leone 2013 is carried out using a traditional approach that respects the fruit. Fermentations proceed slowly in pink-painted concrete vats, characteristic of the estate. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in these same vessels. The wine is then transferred to large wooden foudres for extended aging over several years, without the use of new oak barrels. This method allows gentle oxidative maturation that preserves aromatic purity while developing the wine’s complexity. After several additional years in bottle in the estate’s cellars, Belle Leone 2013 is released at full maturity.
