Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a bright pale yellow color, enhanced by subtle golden highlights that reflect its concentration and the ripeness of the fruit.

Nose

The nose is initially discreet, gradually revealing spicy and peppery notes accompanied by hints of exotic spices. With aeration, the bouquet opens up to floral aromas of rose and Turkish delight, complemented by nuances of cinnamon, ginger, and citrus zest. A mineral dimension emerges through chalky and saline notes, a signature of the limestone terroir.

Palate

On the palate, the wine combines intensity and elegance with a fine freshness supported by ripe acidity. The texture reveals a subtle tannic structure, a rare characteristic for a white wine but typical of Hengst gewurztraminers from old vines grown on limestone soils. The palate unfolds concentrated aromas of white stone fruits, notably peach and mirabelle plum, along with exotic fruits. A citrus peel bitterness on the finish brings tension and balance. The remarkable length and persistent minerality point to excellent aging potential.

Food and wine pairings

This Gewurztraminer Grand cru pairs perfectly with Alsatian specialties such as baeckeoffe. It also matches beautifully with fine poultry dishes such as five-spice duck or roast goose. Goose foie gras makes for a prestigious pairing. Spicy Asian cuisines, particularly Thai and Indian, find an ideal partner in this wine. For cheeses, opt for aged cooked pressed cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère, as well as washed-rind cheeses.

Serve the Gewurztraminer Grand cru "Hengst" 2019 at a temperature between 50 and 54°F. This wine can be enjoyed today, which is rare for a Hengst, but will gain in complexity over time. It can be cellared until around 2029–2039.

The estate

The Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was founded in 1959 through the union of Léonard Humbrecht and Geneviève Zind, bringing together two Alsatian winemaking families. Since 1989, Olivier Humbrecht, the first French Master of Wine, has led the estate with a philosophy focused on expressing terroirs. The vineyard now spans around forty hectares across four grands crus: Rangen, Brand, Hengst, and Goldert. A pioneer of biodynamics in Alsace, the estate obtained biodynamic certification in 2002. Olivier Humbrecht has also chaired the International Federation of Biodynamic Winegrowers since 2002. Pierre-Émile Humbrecht, representing the thirteenth generation, actively participates in the family estate’s activities.

The vineyard

The Gewurztraminer Grand cru "Hengst" 2019 comes from two historic plots of the estate located on the south to southeast-facing slopes of the Grand Cru Hengst in Wintzenheim, in Alsace. The first plot was planted in the 1920s, the second in the 1950s by Émile Zind. These centenarian and seventy-year-old vines, derived from massal selections, are rooted in Oligocene limestone marl soils rich in iron oxides, giving the terroir its characteristic reddish hue. The vineyard ranges from 270 to 360 meters in altitude on steep, south-facing slopes, benefiting from a warm and dry climate sheltered by the Vosges mountains. Certified biodynamic farming favors manual work and horse plowing on these steep hillsides. Yields are deliberately limited to around thirty-five hectoliters per hectare.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage in Alsace is marked by particularly favorable conditions for producing high-quality wines. The growing season benefited from generous sunshine and warm, dry conditions, allowing optimal grape ripening. These ideal climatic conditions enabled the Hengst gewurztraminers to reach exceptional phenolic ripeness while preserving sufficient acidity for balance. Harvest took place under optimal conditions, with healthy grapes naturally achieving high ripeness levels without excessive botrytis.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for the Gewurztraminer Grand cru "Hengst" 2019 are harvested by hand and then slowly pressed over nearly twenty-four hours for gentle extraction. Must clarification is intentionally limited to preserve indigenous yeasts and natural proteins. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with natural yeasts, without the addition of selected yeasts, and continues until the sugars are fully fermented. The wine is then aged on fine lees in large wooden vats for twelve to eighteen months, developing complexity and texture. No additives are used. Bottling takes place between twelve and twenty-four months after harvest.
