Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Terres Dorées "La Rochelle" 2023 Jean-Paul Brun
Tasting
Colour
The wine reveals a clear, brilliant ruby hue with lovely depth.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with expressive notes of small red and black fruits such as raspberry, plum and black cherry. These are enhanced by hints of spice, nuances of liquorice and fresh earth, and delicate floral scents reminiscent of violet.
Palate
The palate offers juicy, perfectly balanced substance, supported by polished tannins and a refreshing acidity free of any harshness. This medium-bodied red wine unfolds into a long finish that extends the fruity and spicy aromas, lifted by a subtle mineral imprint.
Food and wine pairings
With its elegant structure, this wine is an ideal match for refined cuisine and flavourful dishes such as meats in sauce, grilled cuts of beef or poultry roasted with gentle spices.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate the Terres Dorées "La Rochelle" 2023, it is best served at a temperature between 14 and 16°C. In its youth, a light decanting of a few hours is recommended to release its full aromatic range. This wine for laying down can be enjoyed now or cellared until around 2033.
The elegance and depth of a great Moulin-à-Vent wine
The estate
Founded in 1979 by Jean-Paul Brun, Domaine des Terres Dorées is located in Charnay, in the south of Beaujolais. This visionary winemaker built the estate's reputation on a Burgundian approach that showcases the authentic expression of each terroir. Today, the domaine covers nearly 60 hectares, spread across limestone soils and granite crus. To secure its long-term future, Jean-Paul Brun has entrusted the management of this benchmark estate to Domaines Roger Zannier since the 2024 harvest, while preserving the artisanal, low-intervention identity that is its signature.
The vineyard
This cuvée comes from the prestigious Moulin-à-Vent cru, more specifically from the lieu-dit "La Rochelle". This high-altitude terroir, set at the top of a well-ventilated hillside, lies on poor granite soils that encourage deep rooting and a natural concentration in the berries. The vines, aged between 30 and 45 years, are farmed with the utmost respect for the environment and ploughed. The grapes are harvested by hand to preserve the quality of the fruit.
Vinification and ageing
The vinification of the Terres Dorées "La Rochelle" 2023 follows a Burgundian philosophy, forgoing the carbonic maceration traditionally used in the region. After partial or total destemming, the grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts at carefully controlled temperatures. An extended maceration draws out the substance and structure characteristic of this terroir. The wine is then aged for up to ten months, partly in wooden vessels.
