The elegance and power of a red wine from Saint-Estèphe
The estate
The winemaking history of Château Montrose officially began in 1815 under the impetus of Théodore Dumoulin. Located in the Bordeaux region, the estate enjoyed a meteoric rise, achieving Second Grand Cru status as early as the 1855 Classification. Now run by Pierre Graffeuille and Charlotte Bouygues, under the stewardship of owners Martin and Olivier Bouygues, the property covers 95 hectares. It stands out for an environmental commitment unprecedented in scale in the region, including the conversion to organic viticulture, eco-grazing and the electrification of its equipment.
The vineyard
Overlooking the Gironde estuary, the single-block vineyard enjoys a privileged location within the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The vines thrive on a terroir of deep Pyrenean gravel resting on a clay subsoil. This geographical position creates an ideal microclimate, regulated by the estuary, which protects the vines from frost and ensures excellent ventilation. The estate also fosters rich biodiversity thanks to hedgerows, cover crops and a flock of sheep that naturally maintains the soils.
The vintage
1995 is recognised as a very fine vintage for the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Overall weather conditions that year proved particularly favourable, allowing the grapes to reach optimal phenolic ripeness, ideal for crafting structured wines built for long ageing.
Vinification and ageing
Crafted with the same exacting standards as the grand vin, La Dame de Montrose 1995 benefits from a rigorous plot-by-plot selection. This cuvée is traditionally aged in French oak barrels for around twelve months, with approximately 30% new oak, refining the structure while preserving the vibrancy of the fruit.
Grape varieties
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
