In-Stock
Description
A Riesling with great structure and remarkable acidity
The estate
Inseparable from its owner Fred Loimer, the Loimer estate has established itself as a benchmark in the world of wine. Modern and innovative, this winemaker has a deep respect for nature. He always relies on hand harvesting and follows the principles of biodynamic viticulture to the letter. A proponent of minimal intervention in the cellar, he draws solely on the quality of his grapes to craft great wines from Austria of singular character. The Loimer wines capture the uniqueness of the complex terroir of the Kamptal, together with the passion and patience of a highly talented winemaker.
The vineyard
This Riesling Langenlois Seeberg 2018, from the Kamptal DAC appellation (equivalent to a PDO), comes from the Langenlois Seeberg vineyard. Lying at an altitude of 300 to 320 metres with a south-west exposure, this plot has a terroir typical of the region. Its continental climate brings warm days and cold nights, and its soil is predominantly mica. The vines, aged between 20 and 65 years, benefit from the estate's organic and biodynamic farming.
The wine
The estate's understated label bears a small, intriguing logo. It is in fact a Polynesian symbol of fertility, a subtle reference to biodynamics and to the idea that Nature is a living being.
The vintage
2018 began with a very cold winter, which delayed budburst and spared the vines from any damage by spring frosts. Spring broke temperature records and was the second warmest ever recorded, after that of 1767. The berries therefore ripened very quickly, and nature's frantic pace continued through a hot, dry summer. Harvesting began as early as August, but the side effects of 2018's exceptional weather then made themselves felt, as storms and torrential rain interrupted the picking. Fortunately, a sunny and relatively dry September allowed the harvest to be completed at a leisurely pace.
Vinification and ageing
The harvest takes place at the end of September, and only the finest berries of this Riesling grape are selected by hand. Half of the wine is fermented in oak casks and half in stainless steel tanks for 4 weeks, at an ambient temperature of around 22 degrees. The wine is then aged on its lees in oak casks for 19 months.
