A Rich and Balanced Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru by Louis Latour
The Estate
Founded in 1797 by Jean Latour, Maison Louis Latour has remained an independent family-owned house for eleven generations. Based in Aloxe-Corton, it owns 50 hectares of vineyards in Burgundy, including 28.63 hectares of Grands Crus, making it the largest owner of Grand Cru plots in the Côte d'Or. A pioneer of Chardonnay in Corton-Charlemagne after the phylloxera crisis, Louis Latour combines centuries-old tradition with winemaking excellence. Since the passing of Louis-Fabrice Latour in 2022, his brother Florent has been at the helm of the house.
The Vineyard
The "La Garenne" climat lies just above "Champgains" in the heart of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation, which covers 216 hectares between Meursault to the north and Chassagne-Montrachet to the south. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, enjoy an ideal south-east exposure. The terroir rests on a subsoil of limestone and scree, while the topsoils are limestone and marl. The name "Garenne" refers to an enclosed wood historically used for hunting small game, particularly rabbits. The grapes are harvested by hand, with an average yield of 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Garenne" 2023 is vinified traditionally in oak barrels and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. It is then aged for 8 to 10 months in medium-toast French oak barrels from the Tonnellerie Louis Latour, 50% of which are new.
Grape Variety
This Burgundy wine is made from Chardonnay.
