Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Pétrus 2025
Tasting
Nose
The bouquet stands out for its richness and complexity, combining ripe black and red fruit aromas with floral notes of violet and iris, along with touches of truffle and liquorice that add remarkable aromatic depth.
Palate
On the palate, the texture is dense and structured, carried by massive yet remarkably polished tannins that envelop the palate with a texture that is both generous and silky. The tension and freshness running through the wine give it a rare balance between power and elegance, with a saline finish that lingers at length.
Food and Wine Pairing
Pétrus traditionally pairs with beef and game dishes, whose richness and intensity match the power of the wine. It can be enjoyed alongside grilled or roasted red meat, or game prepared in a sauce, both capable of engaging with the aromatic depth of this Pomerol wine.
Serving and Cellaring
Still ageing in barrel, Pétrus 2025 has not yet been delivered and will require many years of patience before revealing its full potential. Its dense tannic structure and concentration suggest an ageing potential measured in decades. When tasted at a distance from the vintage, it is best served at around 16-18°C, ideally after a long decanting to soften the texture and allow the bouquet to fully unfold.

The Estate
The modern history of Pétrus began in 1925, when Marie-Louise Loubat set about bringing together the parcels that make up this Pomerol estate in Bordeaux today. The property then came under the control of the Moueix family in 1969. Today, Pétrus belongs to Jean-François Moueix and his children, with the Santo Domingo family having acquired a 20% minority stake in 2018. Without any official classification, Pétrus has established itself, through the quality of its wines alone, as one of the most prestigious names in world viticulture.
The Vineyard
The vineyard from which this wine comes extends over just over eleven hectares, on the highest part of the Pomerol plateau. It rests on a soil of heavy bluish clay, rich in iron oxides, offering good water retention while benefiting from natural drainage favoured by the topography. Worked entirely by hand and free of synthetic inputs since 1998, the vineyard features high planting densities and deliberately very low yields, reflecting a constant pursuit of concentration and purity.
The Vintage
The 2025 vintage in Bordeaux was, overall, a very successful year for the great terroirs. The harvest, early but staggered, began in late August for the young vines before continuing in early September for the older parcels, with each parcel picked at its optimum ripeness. These conditions allowed the Merlot to reach a high level of ripeness, with a particularly low yield of 20 hectolitres per hectare.
Winemaking and Ageing
Pétrus 2025 was vinified in concrete tanks, in keeping with the estate's tradition, with a measured extraction designed to preserve the finesse of the tannins despite the density of the wine. Ageing took place in French oak barrels, with approximately 50% new oak, a choice reflecting a desire to restrain the oak influence in the face of the vintage's natural power.
Grape Variety
This wine is made from Merlot, the exclusive grape variety of Pétrus for many years.
