Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the 30 Year Old Glenfarclas

Tasting Appearance

This spirit reveals a rich golden to amber hue, deep and natural, achieved without any artificial coloring. In the glass, its viscosity is revealed through slow-forming legs that trickle down the sides, a testament to its long and patient maturation.

Nose

The nose unfolds in several complex layers. The first impressions reveal a refreshing acidity of green apple and citrus, mingled with burnt caramel and distant echoes of cognac. As it opens up, rich aromas of fruity Christmas cake, orange peel, nectarines and roasted almonds emerge, subtly underscored by light notes of eucalyptus, pine wood and the characteristic influence of sherry casks.

Palate

The palate opens with moderate intensity before gaining in power, revealing pronounced notes of almond paste and roasted almond, offering a sophisticated balance between sweetness and slight bitterness. The palate then evolves toward an abundance of fruit: berries, oranges, peaches and candied cherries, supported by a delicate woody acidity. Nuances of fruit tea, honey, vanilla and spices such as cinnamon and ginger blend with touches of roasted dark chocolate. The finish, of beautiful length, elegantly lingers on notes of spiced wood, dried fruit and burnt chocolate.

Pairing and Tasting Moments

This meditative spirit is best enjoyed neat, at room temperature or slightly chilled, in a classic tasting glass. It is fully savored as a digestif, comfortably settled by the fireside on a winter evening. On the culinary side, it pairs wonderfully with high-quality dark chocolate (50 to 70% cocoa), caramelized walnuts, praline almonds, or bold blue cheeses, duck confit and foie gras.

Mixology

As this is an exceptional product that has aged for three decades, it is highly recommended to enjoy it neat, without any additions or dilution, in order to preserve the integrity and complexity of its aromatic palette.

Other Characteristics

This spirit stands out for being entirely unpeated. The absence of peat smoke allows the distillate's natural fruity notes and the influence of the sherry casks to fully express themselves. It is bottled at an alcohol content of 43% vol.

An Elegantly Refined Speyside Single Malt Profoundly Marked by Sherry

The Glenfarclas Distillery: Family Independence at the Heart of Speyside

Officially founded in 1836 by Robert Hay, the Glenfarclas distillery was acquired in 1865 by John Grant. Located in the prestigious Speyside region, at the foot of Ben Rinnes, it embodies the excellence of traditional Scottish Whisky. A rare occurrence in today's industry, Glenfarclas remains one of the last truly independent distilleries, now run by the fifth and sixth generations of the family, with John L.S. Grant as chairman and his son George S. Grant. The production facility is distinguished by its ancestral use of direct-fired copper stills and twelve stainless steel fermentation vats. This faithfulness to historic methods, combined with an exceptionally pure water source, creates a robust and fruity spirit, reflecting a long-term vision and an unbroken family heritage.

The Meticulous Crafting of the 30 Year Old: A Masterpiece of Maturation

This exceptional Single Malt is the result of a rigorous production process, beginning with the selection of unpeated malted barley. Precise milling and careful mashing precede an extended fermentation of approximately 106 hours, encouraging the development of complex aromatic compounds. Distillation, carried out in large directly gas-fired stills, forges the rich and fruity character of this Whisky before it is filled into casks.

The 30 Year Old draws its remarkable complexity from three decades of rest in the distillery's traditional dunnage warehouses. The blend is based on a proportion of around two-thirds ex-Spanish sherry casks (notably Oloroso) and one-third ex-American bourbon casks. This aging process benefits from an exceptional microclimate offering an extremely low evaporation rate of just 0.05% per year, thereby preserving a substantial quantity of this precious liquid.

Presented in a classic 70-centiliter bottle, this spirit has been carefully reduced to achieve a perfect balance at 43% vol., with no added coloring. Its excellence has been recognized with numerous international accolades, including a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge in 2005 and the title of best single malt available in Australia in 2009, confirming its status as an essential benchmark for connoisseurs.
