Description

A great Spanish white wine, full-bodied and refined

The estate

Once owned by Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoléon III and the last Empress of France, Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz embodies an estate with a heritage as noble as it is passionate. Since 1996, the property has been in the hands of two brothers, Eduardo and Victor Hernáiz. They give the estate far more than just their name: they shape it with their know-how, their family history, and also with their ambition and their shared dreams. In this way, they paint the colors, scents and aromas of wines that tell the story of a terroir—the family vineyards—through cuvées renowned for their elegance and minerality.

The vineyard

Finca la Empératriz Gran Vino Blanco comes from exceptional terroirs in Rioja, a Spanish appellation renowned for the quality of its wines. Here, 50- to 65-year-old vines thrive at an altitude of 570 meters. The soil is covered with a layer of coarse white pebbles, anchored up to 40 cm deep before giving way to a sandy subsoil. Excellent drainage and ideal exposure make it perfectly suited to viticulture, producing very fine and elegant wines.

The wine

Finca La Emperatriz is the original name of a unique estate in Baños de Rioja, now owned by the Hernáiz family. The name comes from the original owner, the former Empress of France Eugenia de Montijo. This Spanish noblewoman was the wife of Napoléon III—himself the founder of the “Cru” system in Bordeaux—and as early as the second half of the 19th century, she produced high-quality wines, which were even awarded a medal at the 1878 World’s Fair in Paris.

Vinification and aging

6-hour skin contact. Fermentation in concrete tanks and barriques. Aging on fine lees lasts 4 months and is accompanied by bâtonnage. Maturation for 8 months in concrete tanks and 9 months in French oak barrels (1/3 new, 1/3 second-fill and 1/3 third-fill).

Grape variety
This Finca la Empératriz Viñedo Singular Blanco 2019 from Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz is 100% Viura.
