Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Octomore Edition 17.2
Tasting
Nose
The nose of Octomore Edition 17.2 reveals notes of red fruit and Port layered over a powerful maritime smoke, an aromatic profile resulting from the combination of Concerto barley peated to 81 ppm and maturation in ex-bourbon casks and French Port wine casks.
Mixology
An exceptional limited-edition release, Octomore Edition 17.2 is best enjoyed neat, without artifice, in order to fully appreciate the complexity of its blend of red fruit, notes of Port and intense smoke.
Other characteristics
This single malt features an extreme peating level of 81 ppm, one of the highest in Scotch whisky, achieved with Concerto barley grown on the Scottish mainland. It is then aged in a combination of ex-bourbon casks and French Port wine casks, before being bottled at 59.5% ABV. This expression is part of the Octomore 17 series, launched by the Bruichladdich distillery.
Octomore Edition 17.2, an Extremely Peated Islay Single Malt from the Bruichladdich Distillery
Bruichladdich and Octomore: an Islay distillery between Victorian heritage and innovation
Octomore is a series of extremely peated single malts produced by the Bruichladdich distillery, founded in 1881 on the island of Islay, on the shores of Loch Indaal, by the Harvey brothers. After several closures during the 20th century, the distillery was reborn in 2001 thanks to Murray McDavid, a company founded by Mark Reynier, which restored the Victorian facilities without radically modernising them, preserving a traditional, non-computerised way of working. Bruichladdich stands out for its commitment to terroir, with the cultivation of local barley, experimentation with peat and a B Corp status attesting to its sustainable approach. Since 2012, the distillery has belonged to the Rémy Cointreau group. Octomore Scotch whisky is crafted there as the most radical expression of this philosophy, pushing peating levels well beyond the usual Islay standards.
Octomore Edition 17.2: an extremely peated expression combining Scottish barley and Port casks
Edition 17.2 Whisky belongs to the Octomore 17 series and is an Islay single malt made from Concerto barley grown on the Scottish mainland. This barley is peated to an exceptional level of 81 ppm, one of the highest offered by the Bruichladdich distillery, before being distilled and then matured in a combination of ex-bourbon casks and French Port wine casks. This double maturation combines the sweetness of bourbon with the fruity richness of Port, while allowing the intense smoke characteristic of the Octomore range to shine through. Edition 17.2 is bottled at 59.5% ABV, a high strength that reflects the distillery's uncompromising approach.
This edition follows Bruichladdich's tradition of transparency, as the distillery communicates in detail on the origin of its barley, the peating levels and the types of casks used for each of its cuvées. Octomore thus remains a benchmark among the most heavily peated single malts in the world, backed by a distillery renowned for its traditional methods, its commitment to Scottish terroir and its ability to marry powerful smoke with creative maturation in wine casks.
