The Elegance and Richness of a Super Tuscan from a Prestigious Bolgheri Estate

The Estate
Created in 1981 by Marquis Lodovico Antinori, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia spans 97 hectares in the prestigious Bolgheri DOC in Tuscany. Owned by the Frescobaldi family since 2005 and led by Ferdinando Frescobaldi, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir of marine, alluvial, and volcanic soils. An emblematic figure among Super Tuscans, Ornellaia stands out for its “quality without compromise” philosophy and its preservation of centenary olive trees, creating a unique harmony between tradition and modern winemaking innovation.

The Vineyard
The Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia vineyard draws mainly from the youngest plots of the estate located in the Bolgheri DOC appellation. These terroirs benefit from the exceptional Mediterranean climate of the Tuscan coast and the diverse soils that have earned this exceptional wine-growing area its reputation.

The Vintage
The winter of 2023 was mild with relatively high temperatures and average rainfall, encouraging an early start to vegetative growth. Spring brought abundant rains, creating significant water reserves for the summer and requiring meticulous work in the vineyard. The summer was warm but not extreme, punctuated by some beneficial showers that helped mitigate water stress and ensure gradual and steady ripening with good concentration and well-defined tannins. Late August and September rains, accompanied by cool nights, enriched the aromatic complexity and preserved acidity, resulting in a balanced wine that combines power and elegance.

Winemaking and Aging
The grapes for Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2023 are hand-harvested in 15 kg crates. A double manual sorting is carried out before and after destemming, followed by a light crushing. Since 2016, an optical sorting step completes the process to improve quality. Each grape variety and plot are vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in concrete vats, between 22 and 28 °C, for 15 days. Maceration lasts 10 to 15 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in tank. Aging extends over 15 months in barrels, of which 25% are new wood and 75% are one-year-old barrels. After 12 months, the wines are blended and returned to barrels for an additional 3 months. After bottling, the wine rests for 6 months before release.

Grape Varieties
Merlot (44%), Cabernet Sauvignon (37%), Cabernet Franc (11%) and Petit Verdot (8%).
