A dry, succulent version, with a hint of plumpness to the notes of lemon, white blossoms and chamomile, all underlined by a salty mineral vein. Grapefruit pith acidity courses through but stops short of piercing, which makes this very drinkable. Drink now through 2030. 6,213 cases made, 200 cases imported.

The 2023 Riesling trocken was harvested in the villages of Westhofen, Gundersheim and Hangen-Weisheim, from cooler sites of limestone and calcareous marl. Chervil, flint and lemon immediately show nerve and verve, fragrant and fresh. This is slender, bright, absolutely pure and sprightly, with vivid lemon brightness and zesty, bone-dry length. This stunning entry-level wine marries the power we associate with the Wonnegau sub-region of Rheinhessen with a wonderful elegance. The chalky minerality builds impressively on the compact, medium-bodied palate. Very long, complex finish for this category. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the 2023 Riesling Trocken by Weingut Wittmann

    Tasting notes

    Color
Beautifully translucent, this wine reflects a remarkable visual lightness.

    Nose
The powerful bouquet reveals aromas of lime and apple. Delicate notes of peach and apricot intertwine with a subtle touch of melon, illustrating the freshness of its terroir.

    Palate
This Riesling Trocken proves refined and flavorful. Its mineral texture blends seamlessly into the whole, supporting the fruit with elegance. The particularly long and invigorating finish is underpinned by a beautiful acidity.

    Food and wine pairing

This dry white wine pairs wonderfully with grilled or poached fish, simply seasoned with salt and lemon, as well as with oysters and seafood. It also complements light herb-roasted poultry, subtly spiced Asian dishes, or pork-based specialties such as roasts and charcuterie.

    Service and storage

Thanks to its solid acidic structure, this 2023 vintage has the aging potential to evolve gracefully over several decades.

    Other characteristics

This wine has a moderate alcohol content of between 11.5 and 12%. Its total acidity ranges from 7.4 to 8.9 g/l, while its residual sugar lies between 2.9 and 6.4 g/l, confirming its authentically dry profile.

The pure, biodynamic expression of a great white wine from Rheinhessen

    The estate

First mentioned in 1663, Weingut Wittmann is a historic reference located in the Rheinhessen region of Germany. Now run by Philipp Wittmann, supported by his parents Günter and Elisabeth as well as his wife Eva Clüsserath-Wittmann, this family estate stands as a true pioneer of biodynamics in Germany. The vineyard, converted to organic farming in 1990 and then to biodynamics in 2004, spans around thirty hectares. A member of the VDP, the estate is renowned worldwide for its dry white wines combining mineral precision with deep respect for the terroir.

    The vineyard

Located in the Wonnegau district, south of the Rheinhessen appellation, the vineyard thrives on hills rising up to 240 meters in altitude. The vines benefit from predominantly limestone soils, enriched with clay, marl, and loess. Vineyard management follows strict biodynamic principles, promoting biodiversity and soil activation through natural composts, with no synthetic chemical inputs whatsoever.

    The vintage

2023 began with generous winter rainfall, allowing water reserves to be replenished. A cool April slightly delayed bud break in the vines. Ideal summer conditions leading up to harvest then favored optimal ripening, resulting in a healthy and perfectly balanced growing cycle.

    Winemaking and aging

Following selective hand-harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed using a pneumatic press. The juice then flows by gravity into an underground cellar dating from 1829. Fermentation takes place slowly, relying exclusively on indigenous yeasts, in large neutral oak casks or concrete tanks, in order to preserve all of the wine's aromatic delicacy.

    Grape variety

This wine is made exclusively from Riesling.
