The estate
Mariano García and Javier Zaccagnini founded Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos in 1999 with the aim of producing great Spanish wines that are complex, balanced, and endowed with a unique personality. Over the years, Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos has established itself as a benchmark among the leading producers of Ribera del Duero. These rich and refined wines quickly garnered international recognition, as evidenced by the estate’s ranking among the world’s top 100 wineries by French critics Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve.
The vineyard
The Spanish vineyard of Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos spans 130 hectares and stands out for its mosaic of more than 200 plots spread across 9 different municipalities. With varied altitudes and unique microclimates, each plot requires individual monitoring to harvest at the optimal ripeness date. Meticulous care is given to this vineyard, farmed without herbicides or pesticides, with vines aged 40 to 100 years.
The wine
Aalto by Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos is a Ribera del Duero wine crafted from a rigorous selection of 40- to 80-year-old vines located in vineyards across nine different villages in the provinces of Burgos and Valladolid.
Vintage
Autumn began with high temperatures and little rainfall, followed by late-October showers and frosts at the end of November. Winter was cold and dry after a mild start, with precipitation in December. Spring was mostly dry, with frosts in May and storms at the end of the month, while summer experienced severe drought and several heatwaves. Harvest began in early September under unstable weather with some rain.
Winemaking and aging
Manual harvesting with sorting on a table. Aged for 17 months in French and American oak barrels.
