It’s hard to imagine how a dry riesling could have a more intense stony minerality than this masterpiece from the Grand Cru Sommerberg. This is wrapped in a very deep blanket of stone fruit and wildflower aromas on the silky, medium- to full-bodied palate. The structure that supports the finish is so deep and strong, but never steps into the foreground. From vines planted in 1946 in a southeast-facing parcel in the lower section of this site. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Riesling Dudenstein Sommerberg Grand Cru is from a more complex parcel where granite is mixed with limestone and sandstone. This was made from vines planted in 1946 and 1953. A shy nose hints at zesty citrus. The palate is distinctly juicy, delving into green-yellow Reine Claude plum, emanating coolness and sporting a touch of pear peel on its texture. Yet it is absolutely concentrated, with a finish reminiscent of eau-de-vie and Mirabelle. (Bone-dry)

    Description

An exceptional riesling from an Alsatian granite terroir

    The estate

Founded in 1673, the estate was restructured in 1946 by Albert Boxler and his wife Élise, who made the property name official. Based in Niedermorschwihr in Alsace, the estate spans 19 hectares, half of which is classified as the Grands Crus Brand and Sommerberg. Jean Boxler, the twelfth generation, now carries on the family legacy. The steep, hillside granite terroirs require exclusively manual work. Producing mainly white wines vinified in large Alsatian foudres, the estate favors finesse and elegance. The labels, created in 1946, remain unchanged, symbolizing family continuity.

    The vineyard

The lieu-dit Dudenstein lies on the eastern edge of the Alsatian Grand Cru Sommerberg, within the commune of Niedermorschwihr. At 300 meters above sea level, this outstanding terroir enjoys south and southeast exposure on very steep slopes. The granite soil, extremely stony, is locally interspersed with limestone and sandstone, giving the wines a unique complexity. The vines, 70 to 79 years old, are farmed organically with predominantly manual work. Plowing is carried out using a winch and manual hoeing, underscoring the demanding nature of this steep terroir.

    Vinification and aging

The harvest took place on September 20, allowing grapes to be picked at optimal ripeness. This year’s yield reached a historically low level of 25 hl/ha, well below the usual average of 35 hl/ha. This Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg "Dudenstein" 2023 is crafted using traditional methods that respect the fruit. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters, followed by static settling without temperature control. Fermentation, lasting 2 to 6 months, takes place in foudres, these large, traditional Alsatian wooden vessels. Aging continues for 11 months on full lees, allowing the wine to develop complexity and depth while preserving the purity of the terroir.

    Grape variety

This Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg "Dudenstein" 2023 from Albert Boxler is 100% riesling.
