    James Suckling

Fresh and aromatic, showing jasmine, green tea, sliced apples and pears on the nose. It’s medium-bodied, bright and pristine. Hard to resist. From young chenin blanc vines. Drink or hold.

    Neal Martin

I ordered the 2023 Hereafter Here after spotting it on my hotel wine list in Stellenbosch. It’s drinking beautifully, with scents of honeysuckle, linden and a subtle oily note in the background. The palate is beautifully balanced, with real weight and density, though it’s really the texture that wins you over. Grapefruit and kumquat notes furnish the finish. Lovely.

An elegant and profound Chenin Blanc from the Western Cape

    The estate

Founded in 2011 by Chris and Suzaan Alheit, Alheit Vineyards has quickly established itself as an essential reference in South Africa's Western Cape. The couple works with parcels located in several prestigious terroirs of the Western Cape, notably Swartland, Piekenierskloof and Paardeberg. Their non-interventionist philosophy and their pursuit of the most authentic expression of terroir allow Alheit Vineyards to produce exceptional white wines, mainly crafted from Chenin Blanc, renowned for their remarkable finesse and depth.

    The vineyard

The Hereafter Here 2023 comes from young Chenin Blanc vines grown in bush vine training across several terroirs of the Western Cape: Swartland, Piekenierskloof, Bottelary, Polkadraai, Paardeberg and Tygerberg. These plots are planted between 60 and 700 metres in altitude on predominantly granitic soils. The warm Mediterranean climate benefits from refreshing oceanic influences. Farmed according to sustainable, non-interventionist viticulture, the vineyard is unirrigated and features a low planting density. Yields are limited to 20 hectolitres per hectare.

    Winemaking and aging

The grapes for the Hereafter Here 2023 are hand-harvested, then whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in old barrels over two months. The wine is then aged for 12 months on the lees in these same vessels, followed by a further 6 months in tanks on fine lees. Bottling took place in May 2024, without fining or filtration.
