    Neal Martin

The 2024 Hereafter Here comes from the young vineyards that spend 12 months on the lees. Alheit uses it as a potential parcel for Cartology. This pure Chenin Blanc has an effervescent bouquet with lemon thyme and light citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with citric entry, touches of sour lemon and orange rind on the finish. Just a little abrupt maybe, but fine early drinking.

The Alheit Vineyards 2024 Hereafter Here is sourced from young “baby” vineyards, including newly planted estate parcels and fruit from trusted growers, giving Chris Alheit a space to explore site before vines reach maturity. Fermented and aged in a mix of cement diamond-shaped vessels and mostly older 300- or 500-liter barrels, the wine serves as a kind of playground for future Cartology components. The 2024 vintage was low yielding, lending added concentration and quiet complexity. Salty and fresh, it carries a generous mouthfeel balanced by orchard fruit and preserved lemon. The varied soils of the Western Cape and maritime influence shape even young vines with a mineral tension that anchors the wine’s brightness.

A precise and expressive Chenin Blanc from the Western Cape

    The estate

Founded in 2011 by Chris and Suzaan Alheit, Alheit Vineyards has established itself as a benchmark for the authentic expression of South African terroir in the Western Cape. The couple mainly produces Chenin Blanc and Sémillon wines from old vines. Their radically minimalist philosophy relies on minimal intervention to showcase the purity of the terroir.

    The vineyard

Hereafter Here 2024 comes from young vines as well as from a few parcels of older vines spread across several terroirs of the Western Cape: Swartland, Piekenierskloof, Bottelary, Polkadraai, Paardeberg and Tygerberg. These parcels, still too young to be included in the Cartology cuvée, nonetheless offer a fine expression of South African Chenin Blanc.

    Vinification and aging

Hereafter Here 2024 is crafted following a non-interventionist approach. Whole bunches are pressed, and the slightly cloudy juice is set to ferment without any additions. Spontaneous fermentation takes place for around two months in old barrels of varying sizes. The wine then ages for twelve months on lees in barrel, followed by a further six months in tank on fine lees. No fining is carried out before bottling.

    Grape variety

This white wine from South Africa is made from 100% Chenin Blanc.
