Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Baettig Seleccion de Parcelas "Los Primos" Pinot Noir 2020
Tasting Notes
Appearance
This red wine reveals a deep, particularly dark and intense purple hue.
Nose
The bouquet proves rich and nuanced, blending aromas of well-ripened red fruits such as cherry, raspberry and pomegranate with delicate floral touches of violet and lavender. These are rounded out by notes of damp earth, blond tobacco and cured meat, along with hints of caramel and dark chocolate from the ageing process, all underpinned by a ferrous mineral backbone.
Palate
The attack is vibrant and taut, delivering a juicy texture. Medium-bodied, the palate is structured by fine, firm, chalky tannins balanced by lovely acidity. The finish lingers on mineral notes of iron and chalk, accompanied by hints of spice and chocolate.
Food and Wine Pairings
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with rich yet delicate meats such as roasted duck breast, braised veal or feathered game. It also works wonderfully with earthy dishes such as mushroom risotto or roasted root vegetables.
Serving and Cellaring
The Seleccion de Parcelas "Los Primos" Pinot Noir 2020 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2032.
The Intensity and Minerality of a Pinot Noir from the Malleco Valley
The Estate
The Baettig family's story began in the late 19th century with the arrival of Swiss ancestors. However, the Baettig winery itself was only founded in 2013, driven by its current owners, winemaker Francisco Baettig and his partner Carlos de Carlos. Located in Traiguén, in the province of Malleco within Chile's Southern Regions, the estate stands out for its Burgundian approach and dry farming practices. The winery quickly made a name for itself with terroir-driven wines combining freshness, tension and minerality.
The Vineyard
This Chilean wine comes from Los Primos, a one-hectare elite plot located within the Los Suizos vineyard in Traiguén. Planted in 2013 with Burgundian clones, these vines grow on a plateau of ancient volcanic soils composed of andesite breccia and calcium-rich red clay. Benefiting from heavy rainfall and a cool climate, the vineyard is farmed without any irrigation, encouraging deep rooting and an authentic expression of the terroir.
The Vintage
2020 was marked by particularly hot and dry conditions. Following a rainy winter that helped build up water reserves, spring proved very dry. Summer continued this trend, bringing intense heat and very low rainfall. These conditions led to perfect vine health and excellent berry ripeness, prompting the estate to begin an early harvest as soon as late March in order to preserve all the freshness of the grapes.
Winemaking and Ageing
To craft the Seleccion de Parcelas "Los Primos" Pinot Noir 2020, fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts, with a carefully controlled proportion of whole-cluster grapes to add structure. The wine is then aged for around fifteen months in 300-litre French oak barrels, with a significant share of new oak reaching around 38%, the remainder resting in barrels that have already been used for several vintages.
