    Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for Blandy's Malmsey Colheita Single Harvest 2007

    Tasting

    Appearance
This 2007 Malmsey Colheita displays an amber colour with golden highlights and a crystalline brilliance that reflects its long oxidative ageing.

    Nose
The bouquet is instantly recognisable, with notes of jam and marmalade, candied fruit and nuts such as walnuts and hazelnuts, the classic signature of Madeira's great Malmseys.

    Palate
The attack is rich and enveloping, both sweet and surprisingly fresh. The long finish reveals oaky accents and dried fruit that seems to have been steeped in brandy, pleasantly extending the tasting experience.

    Food and wine pairing

This sweet Madeira pairs beautifully with cakes made with dried fruit and candied orange, as well as chocolate desserts, whose bitterness balances its generous sweetness.

    Serving and cellaring

Decanting this Malmsey Colheita Single Harvest 2007 is recommended to remove any sediment that may have formed in the bottle over time. It should be stored upright, away from light, in a cool, dry place at a constant temperature, ideally below 16°C.

A historic house upholding centuries-old Portuguese expertise

    The estate

Founded in 1811 in Funchal by John Blandy, Blandy's is the only founding family of the Madeira wine trade to have retained ownership and management of its original business two centuries later. Today, the Blandy's brand is run by the Madeira Wine Company, in which the Blandy family holds a majority stake. Based on the island of Madeira, between Funchal and the north coast, the house cultivates several hectares of vines and remains faithful to traditional expertise handed down over seven generations.

    The vineyard

The Malvasia used for this Malmsey comes mainly from the São Jorge area on the north coast of Madeira, where the vines are trained on trellises or pergolas in volcanic soils of basalt, trachyte, tuff and conglomerate. This Portuguese terroir, with its temperate oceanic climate, offers particularly favourable conditions for the expression of the Malvasia grape, grown here by a network of local growers.

    Winemaking and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand, with a quality selection carried out over several passes according to their ripeness. This Malmsey Colheita Single Harvest 2007 is then aged using the traditional Canteiro system in 650-litre casks at ambient temperature until bottling in 2022, under the supervision of cellar master Francisco Albuquerque.

    Grape variety

This Terras Madeirenses wine is made from 100% Malvasia (Malmsey).
