A structured and elegant Ribera del Duero by Bodegas Protos
The estate
Founded in 1927 in Peñafiel in Castile-León, Bodegas Protos is the pioneering estate of the Ribera del Duero appellation. This cooperative brings together more than 250 winegrowing families and oversees around 1,400 hectares of vines. Four descendants of the original founders still sit on the board of directors, ensuring family continuity across three generations. Led by Carlos Villalba, the estate made its mark as early as 1929 with gold medals at the Barcelona Universal Exhibition. Since 2022, Bodegas Protos has ranked among the fifty most admired wineries in the world according to Drinks International. The facilities extend beneath the medieval castle of Peñafiel, with more than two kilometers of underground cellars carved into the mountain.
The vineyard
The Reserva 5 Año 2019 comes from parcels located in the province of Burgos within the Ribera del Duero appellation. The vines, more than 50 years old, are planted on clay-limestone soils. These old vines naturally produce low yields, concentrating the aromas and substance within the berries.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Reserva 5 Año 2019 are hand-harvested in small crates to preserve their integrity. After a cold maceration, alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for twenty-one days, with daily pumping-over. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels. This barrel maturation period is followed by a minimum of 24 months of bottle aging before release.
Grape variety
100% Tinta del País (Tempranillo)
