    Wine Spectator

    Bruce Sanderson

Luscious and elegant, featuring rose, sandalwood, wild strawberry, cherry and spice aromas and flavors. This red firms up as it builds to the long finish, with an aftertaste of fruit, savory and mineral accents. Best from 2026 through 2042. 100 cases imported.

    Decanter

This wine is among the most successful Beaune premier crus in 2021. The aromas begin with mulberry and cassis fruit with notes of earth, menthol, and smoke. Rich and substantial on the palate, it features a surprisingly full body, firm tannins, and rewarding length. The grapes are from the Bouchard monopole of nearly four hectares within Beaune Grèves. In 2021, 30% were fermented as whole clusters to ensure complexity and freshness. This should open well with a few years in bottle and age over the next two decades.

    Stuart Pigott

Here’s a deep and complex 2021 Beaune 1er Cru with layers of dark, earthy complexity as well as abundant red-fruit character and a touch of smoky oak. The serious tannin structure hits the turbo, driving the wine relentlessly forward across the ample palate. Excellent freshness, too. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

    Description

A delicate and expressive Beaune red wine

    The estate

Founded in 1731 in Beaune, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. For nearly three centuries, 9 generations have taken over, one after the other, with the same ambition: to create an exceptional estate in Burgundy.

Gradually built up over the years, the vineyards of the Bouchard Père et Fils estate now cover 130 hectares of vines. Combining prestigious appellations with exceptional plots, the Bouchard Père & Fils vineyard constitutes a unique wine heritage in Burgundy.

    The vineyard

This Beaune Premier Cru "Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jésus" Domaine 2021 wine from Bouchard Père & Fils takes its name from a historical anecdote linked to the Carmelite nun Marguerite du Saint-Sacrement. She is said to have predicted the birth of the future King of France despite his mother, Anne of Austria, being apparently infertile. This vineyard took the name of "Vigne de L'Enfant Jésus" at the birth of Louis XIV. Sold in 1791, when assets owned by the Church or the aristocracy were sold off to the public, this 3.92 hectare plot, with an east/south-east exposure on very gravelly clay-limestone soil, has since been owned by the Maison Bouchard Père & Fils.

    Winemaking and ageing

Hand-picked, the grapes are meticulously sorted and totally or partially destemmed depending on the vintage. Fermentation in small containers. Gentle pressing. Vatting for 12 to 15 days. The wine is aged for 8 to 13 months in French oak barrels (20 to 60% of which are new) in the Bastions cellars of the old Château de Beaune.

    Blend

    Pinot Noir (100%).
