The estate
Castello Banfi is a family estate in the heart of Tuscany. Mindful of traditions and attentive to the needs of the vineyard, the Banfi family is internationally renowned for its excellence in developing great Italian red wines. Banfi is notably one of the precursors in the research, from 1982, into cloning the sangiovese grape, always with the aim of producing an exceptional Brunello di Montalcino wine.
The vineyard
This Fonte alla Selva 2019 from Castello Banfi is a Chianti Classico wine, coming from vineyards planted on shallow clay-sand soils.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage in Tuscany saw uncommonly cold weather in April and May which delayed the growing cycle. The warmer weather just afterwards allowed the vine to catch up. The sunny period in the month of August and September led to an optimal ripening of the grapes, which brought about wines of great quality.
Winemaking and ageing
Fermentation took place in thermoregulated (25-30°C) stainless steel vats, as did ageing, finishing with a short ageing period in French oak casks.
