    A wine of delicate elegance, having opened up a bit since last experienced in April 2022. Impressive persistence of fruit on the palate, more red than black, again with somewhat high‑toned acidity. While it lacks the breadth of vintages like 2018 and 2020, it makes up for it with beguiling wet‑stone “minimalism” and tannic finesse that invite further drinking, marked by floral notes on the long finish.

    This has a very delicious and attractive nose offering ample dark berries and plums with cocoa and freshly cut bracken. The palate has a smooth, fan-like array of fine but sturdy tannins that carry very fresh and upbeat into the finish. Try from 2023.

    The 2016 Cantenac Brown is a super-concentrated, powerful Margaux. Raspberry jam, mocha, licorice, plum, new oak and spice are all lavishly expressed. Broad and sweeping on the palate, with tremendous richness and resonance, Cantenac Brown is among the bigger, more overt Margaux wines of the vintage. Readers should expect a big, ripe wine. In several tastings, the 2016 has come across as a bit over the top, at least for my personal taste. Technical Director Jose Sanfins aged the 2016 for 16 months in oak, 60% new.

    Deep, dark ruby with an opaque core, brightening at the rim. An attractive black forest-fruit profile, with fine oak spice, balsamic touches, and candied orange zest. It is complex, with juicy cherries and integrated tannins. Elegant and fruity, freshly structured, and long lasting. Certain ageing potential.

    A red wine from Margaux of great nobility

    The property
    The Château Cantenac-Brown was built at the beginning of the 19th century by John-Lewis Brown in the town of Cantenac. The property features a Tudor English Renaissance style in memory of his Scottish origins. Year after year, the magnificent Cru Classé de Margaux acquires an international reputation for the quality of its terroir and its wines. At the end of 2019, Château Cantenac-Brown entered a new era in its history following its acquisition by the Le Lous family. Significant investments and restructurings are made, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, to further enhance the excellence of this Cru Classé de Margaux, which enjoys a very good reputation with wines offering one of the best quality-price ratios in the appellation.

    The vineyard
    The vineyard of Château Cantenac Brown has 48 hectares in AOC Margaux, 3.5 in Bordeaux and 1.8 hectares in dry white Bordeaux. Under the direction of José Sanfins, the vineyard is managed with respect for the environment. The soils are traditionally maintained to promote soil microbial life and chemical balance. The fertilizers used are only of plant origin. Thanks to highly mobilized technical teams, each vine receives full attention.

    Vinification and aging
    The production of the grand wine required 49% of the harvest. It was notably aged 60% in new barrels and 40% in one-year-old barrels.

    Characteristics and tasting advice for Château Cantenac Brown 2016

    Tasting

    The wine shows natural nobility, without any excess. The balance is magnificent, with just the right alcohol levels, very digestible. The wine is lively on the palate, dynamic on creamy tannins, suggested, of great elegance and all wrapped in fruit. Undoubtedly, a very great Margaux!
