    Jancis Robinson

    Julia Harding MW

TA 3.6 g/l (sulphuric), RS 103.4 g/l. Harvest cut short by rain so yields were tiny (4 hl/ha). Mid gold. Rich, lightly spicy candied pineapple and melon. Intensely fruited on the nose and on the palate. Currently less complex than the 2001. Very sweet-tasting without the refreshing bitterness and zest to complement it but there's still the fruit acidity to finish fresh. (JH)

01: Relatively pale; transparent with clearly greenish reflections. Open, slightly flat bouquet; mint, cold verbena tea – the sweetness doesn’t really come through and there’s no botrytis either – gummy contours and, despite a good Châteaune name, not very appealing. On the palate, slender; Alka-Seltzer, sharp acidity, grassy notes and a medicinal finish. A bitter disappointment like so many 2000s. Hands off! 15/20 drink – 2025

    Bettane+Desseauve

A fairly golden color for this cru at this stage, mandarin notes on the nose, full-bodied, not yet completely integrated (still a touch of bitterness), not as tight as the other vintages of the new millennium, but very flavorful.

    La RVF

Thanks to a rigorous selection, Bérénice Lurton has crafted a sculpted Climens with superb sugar/acidity balance. The palate is refined, delicate and easy-drinking, with the purity of great vintages. A magnificent bottle.

A fruity wine with a caressing, pleasant palate, clean flavors, and medium body and length.

    Robert Parker Wine Advocate

    Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The proprietors are extremely happy with what they were able to produce in 2000. Even though this vintage has a poor reputation, producers who only included the early-picked grapes in their final blends have often turned out nearly exceptional wines. Yields for the 2000 Climens were microscopic (four hectoliters per hectare) and the wine, although somewhat monolithic (I tasted it right after bottling), exhibits honeyed citrus, pineapple, and hints of pears, butter, and honeysuckle. Medium-bodied and elegant, with superb purity (a hallmark of this great estate), it should be at its finest between 2007-2020.

    Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for Château Climens 2000

    Tasting

    Color

A bright, clear deep golden hue lights up the glass.

    Nose

The bouquet is complex, combining notes of candied citrus and white flowers, notably acacia. Honeyed aromas mingle with yellow-fleshed fruits such as apricot and peach, lifted by a spicy touch reminiscent of saffron.

    Palate

The attack is smooth and creamy, balanced by the minerality and vibrancy characteristic of Climens’ limestone terroir. The finish lingers at length with notes of candied fruit and sweet spices.

    Food and wine pairings

This sweet wine pairs perfectly with foie gras, poultry in cream sauces, blue cheeses such as Roquefort, as well as fruit-based desserts like an apricot tart.

    Serving and cellaring

Château Climens 2000 is ideally served at around 10-12°C. This vintage has excellent aging potential.

A Premier Cru Classé from Barsac with an elegant, mineral character

    The estate

Château Climens, a Premier Cru Classé of 1855, is a benchmark of the Barsac appellation. Nicknamed the “Lord of Barsac”, this historic estate was run by the Lurton family from 1971 to 2022, before being taken over by the Moitry family. The estate is now recognized for its commitment to environmentally respectful viticulture.

    The vineyard

Château Climens benefits from a unique terroir within the Barsac appellation. The vineyard sits on a limestone base, giving the wines remarkable elegance and freshness. This distinctive geological structure provides the hallmark minerality that sets the estate’s wines apart.
