    Vinum

Herbal and red-fruit aromas, rose tea, milk chocolate; a firm, grippy palate, slightly powdery tannins, a fine bitterness on the finish. Leaner than before.

    Decanter

Herbaceous and red fruit aromas introduce a rather austere palate that lacks the depth required to achieve a higher score. Maybe ageing in 40% new oak will fill some of the mid-palate, but it’s a disappointing sample.

Bright red fruits, orange rind, flowers, tobacco and espresso form the character here. The medium-bodied palate is forward, round, and fresh, with black cherries, peppery spice, dark chocolate, and espresso from the mid-palate, through to the savory-edged, mildly chewy, spicy finish. The wine blends 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2027-2039.

Inky colour, brambled autumnal fruits, pretty intense overall. This is good quality, with plenty of appellation typicity, and a clear step up from recent vintages at this estate. Alix Bern is the winemaker, from the Savoie region. 33% new oak for ageing.

    Le Figaro Vin

Score: 90–92. A sanguine edge, with almost ferrous notes, and aromas of wild blackberry and blueberry contribute to a bouquet that is still a touch austere. The palate shows more vibrant, fleshy, juicy fruit. The tannins carry the fresh substance through to the finish, with a faintly velvety grain.

Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Couhins 2023

    Tasting

This vintage elegantly combines a velvety touch with a broad structure and tannins of beautiful finesse.

The creaminess and delicacy of a Pessac-Léognan red wine

    The estate

The Château Couhins emerges from the archives in the 18th century. This estate originally brings together two old wine properties from the Graves. An integral part of the INRA (National Institute of Agronomic Research) network, Château Couhins puts its know-how and vineyard at the service of viticultural research and innovation.

    The vineyard

The Château Couhins red 2023 is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a 23-hectare vineyard located around the town of Villenave d'Ornon at the gates of Bordeaux. The vines are planted on a mosaic of terroirs formed by a gravelly hill and a clay-limestone slope. To preserve this precious terroir, the estate uses environmentally friendly viticulture.

    Vinification and ageing

Following the harvest, the grapes are rigorously sorted before being gravity-fed into the vats. Fermentation with infusion and gentle pumping over. Maceration from 6 to 24 days depending on the batches. The ageing of 12 months is carried out in French oak barrels (23% of which are new).

    Blend

    Merlot (53%)
    Cabernet Sauvignon (39%)
    Petit Verdot (8%).
