Description
A rich and powerful fine wine from Pauillac
The estate
The Liberal family has owned Château Haut-Bages Libéral since the beginning of the 18th century. Over time, these fine connoisseurs have brought together the best terroirs of Pauillac. Today, this Pauillac Classified Growth is the property of the Villars family who acquired in in 1983 and revived a Château Haut-Bages Libéral the luster of yesteryear. The family has invested in new winemaking equipment and has converted the cultivation of the vineyard to sustainable viticulture.
The vineyard
Château Haut-Bages Libéral is an organically produced wine which will soon convert to biodynamics. The 30 hectares of vines are planted in Gunzian Garonne gravel on a clay-limestone subsoil.
The vintage
The generally mild winter gave way to cool spring temperatures that slowed down the mineralisation of the soil. The hot, dry summer helped the vines fight off mildew. The temperature difference between the days and nights allowed for a full development of the aromatic palette of the fruit. The harvested grapes had reached perfect maturity.
The blend
Cabernet sauvignon (80%), merlot (20%)
The winemaking
Manual harvest. Traditional vinification in concrete tanks. Plot selection.
The ageing
16 months of ageing in French oak barrels (40% new barrels).
The tasting
This great Bordeaux wine is ripe, rich and powerful. The Château Haut-Bages Libéral 2019 can be enjoyed young but can also reveal a nice potential for age.
