    James Molesworth

Gentle in feel, with soft damson plum and red cherry notes infused with hints of black tea and singed cedar. Savory-flecked finish. Without grain, but rather sedate. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2026. 2,000 cases made.

    Decanter

Great fragrance and intensity of aromatics on the nose. Clear and clean, juicy and lively, with a nice sense of restraint, featuring just-ripe, cool blueberries and red cherries with grippy, salty tannins. A success in that they didn’t overdo it here. An easy-drinking example with signature.

The 2021 Lespault-Martillac has a lovely, lilting, finely delineated bouquet with blackberry, raspberry coulis and touches of iris flower. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins, very cohesive and focused with a minerally, tensile finish. This is definitely worth seeking out. It’s delicious and classically styled.

Flowers, espresso, cocoa, cherries and spearmint aromatics get the wine moving on the nose. The medium-bodied, fresh palate is even better with all of its soft, polished, sweet red cherries, black plums, and vibrant black raspberries. This has really improved after its barrel aging. Drink from 2024-2035.

    Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot, the 2021 Lespault-Martillac has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It comes galloping out of the glass with energetic notes of baked plums and boysenberries, plus touches of lavender, dusty soil, and wet slate. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and youthful, with soft, approachable tannins and a red berry lift on the finish.

    Le Figaro Vin

An elegant, refined nose that delights with its purity. On the palate, the promise of the nose is fulfilled, with a gourmet profile that’s very generous, supple, and delicious. The finish, smoky and saline, highly digestible, leaves an irresistible urge to come back for more. A real favorite for this excellent Pessac with great value for money.

The delicacy announced by the bouquet invites you to taste the wine. This is clearly a good sign, as it is highly convincing and motivating to boot. The wine is defined by its freshness and harmony. The acidity provides a mouthwatering, juicy feel, while the tannins deliver density and power. In the end, the wine is balanced, sapid, and endowed with the substance needed for its development.

Beautiful deep dark purple. Intense nose with ripe yet lively fruit. Very fruity, flavorful palate, a touch more astringent than at times, but with flavor and fragrance behind the tannin’s grip. Normal length. Blend: 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 13.5% - pH: 3.67. Yield: 30 hl/ha. Not saignée.

Mostly Merlot, the 2021 Château Lespault-Martillac has a round, supple, nicely textured style with a mix of both red and black fruits, some tobacco and earthy nuances, soft tannins, and a forward, balanced profile on the palate. I’d drink a bottle today, yet it should offer 10–12 years of prime drinking. It’s a solid wine.

Run by the Bernard family of Domaine de Chevalier, this estate on the edge of Martillac has produced a wine that is dominated by juicy Merlot with a high 13% of Petit Verdot. The wine is rich, structured and likely to age well. Drink from 2027.

    Description

A rich and balanced Pessac-Léognan red wine

    The estate

An irresistibly charming and historic property located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Lespault-Martillac has experienced a quality-oriented renaissance. Since 2009, the operation of Château Lespault-Martillac has been entrusted to the Grand Cru Classé de Graves Domaine de Chevalier and Olivier Bernard. With great passion and determination, Olivier Bernard has elevated this estate to its very best through wines that exude terroir in the glass.

    The vineyard

Château Lespault-Martillac produces Pessac-Léognan wines made from a vineyard of which 8 hectares are dedicated to the production of red wines and 1.5 hectares to the estate’s white wines. The vines are 40 years old on average and are planted on deep gravel soils resting on clay and gravel subsoils.

    The vintage

The 2021 vintage was marked by extreme weather conditions. Seven episodes of spring frosts had a significant impact on the vineyard, followed by heavy rainfall between May and June, which led to a strong mildew pressure in July. The mild weather in September and October was ideal and helped to refine the ripening process. The grapes harvested showcased a very high quality and gave rise to a fine vintge, for red and white wines alike.

    Vinification and ageing

The hand-picked  grapes undergo several rigorous sorting processes both when harvested and subsequently in the cellar, before and after destemming. The grapes are transported by gravity flow into 50 to 80-hl temperature-controlled vats. The vinification process is accompanied by manual pumping over and punching down. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in barrels, as is the 14-month ageing period (1/3 new barrels), the first four months of which are spent on lees.

    The blend

    Merlot (50%)

    Cabernet Sauvignon (45%)

    Petit Verdot (5%).
