    Decanter

Tannic and upfront, this is massy and feels a little pushed, with a full mouthfeel but missing the fruit density and brightness to balance it out. A shot of mouthwatering acidity sits in the background, but it accentuates the austerity with some dry toastiness. Tasted twice.

With a strong floral accent to the red berry-oriented perfume, the medium-bodied wine is fresh, forward, soft, and fruity, with a core of red pit fruits that finishes with a savory edge. This will be easy to enjoy with pleasure on release. Drink from 2027-2034. 87-89 Pts

The nose is beautifully handled, precise, intense, offering accuracy and a lovely airy sweet-pepper note. It reveals notes of boysenberry, violet and, more subtly, sweet pepper, combined with touches of ripe strawberry, as well as a hint of crushed cherry and camphor/smoke. The palate is beautifully handled, supple, fresh, mineral, precise and true. It shows an airy, delicate quality in its acidity and energy and displays a tangy backbone. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy/pulpy blackberry, small juicy/bright red berries and, more slightly, violet, combined with touches of fleshy/juicy cherry, blond tobacco, licorice, as well as a discreet toasted/toasted-almond hint and a subtle touch of tea in the background. A varietal/sappy hint on the finish/persistence.

A Moulis wine combining power and finesse

    The property

Founded in 1875 by J. Petit-Laroche, the Château Maucaillou is located in Moulis-en-Médoc, between Margaux and Saint-Julien, on a gravelly terroir conducive to viticulture. Acquired by the Dourthe family in 1929, the estate expanded to 32 hectares under Roger Dourthe. Philippe Dourthe, oenologist, managed the estate until 2013, when his children took over.

    The vineyard

The Château Maucaillou vineyard extends over 72 hectares in the Moulis appellation. The vines benefit from a typical Médoc gravel soil, providing natural drainage and heat reflection, essential elements for the optimal ripening of the grapes.

    The vintage

The 2024 vintage was marked by record rainfall from October 2023 to May 2024, accompanied by milder than normal temperatures. The spring experienced high disease pressure, followed by a hot and dry summer. A hailstorm just before the harvest complicated the situation, but the decision to let the cabernet sauvignon ripen longer proved beneficial, allowing for optimal phenolic maturity.

    Vinification and aging

Traditional vinification in thermo-regulated vats, separately for each grape variety. Daily pump-overs are carried out during alcoholic fermentation to extract color and aromas. Barreling takes place after tasting, about four weeks after the start of fermentation. Aging continues in French oak barrels (30% new, 40% one wine, 30% two wines).

    Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), Merlot (20%) and Petit Verdot (2%).
