Leads off with balsamic notes of juniper, wild rosemary and eucalyptus, gathering cherry and tobacco details as the finish unfolds. A muscular version from La Morra, with dense tannins. Best from 2019 through 2033. 470 cases made.

    James Suckling

Gorgeous aromas of rose petal, strawberry and lavender lead into a full-bodied palate with ripe fruit and tannins. Flavorful notes of tangerine and dried strawberry. Lovely to drink now but better in 2019. Same level of quality as the excellent 2011.

Medium-deep ruby colour, still with a purple hue. Floral and perfumed with darker fruit like black cherry and blackberry, with some nutty and spicy notes such as clove and ginger, and discreet wood in the background. The palate has good grip and flavour intensity in a medium body, well-rounded tannins and integrated acidity, juicy and fresh dark fruit, some peppery notes, and a long, lingering finish. Already good, even if potent.

    K.O.

Leather, underbrush, baked plum, menthol and a whiff of cake spice are some of the aromas that lift out of the glass. The ripe palate delivers dried black cherry, fig, star anise, mocha, espresso and grilled sage while close-grained tannins provide the framework. Drink 2017–2022.

An elegant Barolo from Piedmont by Cordero di Montezemolo

    The estate

Cordero di Montezemolo is a family-owned estate from Piedmont whose history dates back to 1340. Today, the estate is run by Giovanni Cordero di Montezemolo and his children Elena and Alberto, who represent the nineteenth generation at the helm of the property. The vineyard spans 51 hectares in the La Morra area, in the heart of Piedmont. Since 2013, the estate has been fully certified organic, reflecting a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and the authentic expression of terroir. The family upholds values of honor and loyalty, symbolized by the majestic Cedar of Lebanon planted in 1856 that overlooks the vineyard.

    The vineyard

Bricco Gattera comes from a one-hectare parcel in La Morra, at the top of a south-west-facing plot in the Gattera cru, at around 300 meters of altitude. The old vines are planted on clay- and limestone-rich soils, at the foot of the famous century-old Cedar of Lebanon. This optimal exposure and distinctive soil composition provide ideal conditions for Nebbiolo to ripen, allowing the grapes to develop their full aromatic complexity. The vineyard enjoys a privileged position within the Barolo appellation, favoring the production of outstanding wines.

    The vintage

The 2012 vintage in Piedmont is considered excellent. The year began with a harsh winter followed by a cool, wet spring that delayed budbreak. Summer brought warmer temperatures and drier conditions, though disrupted by hail episodes in July and August. A stable, dry autumn allowed for a successful early-October harvest for Nebbiolo. The 2012 wines stand out for their elegance, finesse, and freshness, with balanced acidity and remarkable aromatic depth. This vintage favors delicacy over power.

    Vinification and aging

Bricco Gattera 2012 underwent extended aging in French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving the character of the terroir. This respectful approach aims to let Nebbiolo’s intrinsic qualities fully express themselves without imposing an overly pronounced oak influence.
