Description
Tasting notes and characteristics of Croft's Reserve Tawny Port
Tasting
Appearance
Light brick-red colour, enhanced by delicate amber highlights.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is rich, offering intense notes of red fruits that harmoniously intertwine with hints of caramel, raisins and a touch of clove.
Palate
The palate reveals itself as complex and elegant, marked by flavours of cardamom, spices and butter caramel. Notes of redcurrant and walnut aromas further enrich the whole, leading to a soft and wonderfully rounded finish reminiscent of strawberry jam.
Food and wine pairings
This port pairs wonderfully with almond-based desserts, such as a pecan pie, or pastries with red fruits. It also enhances dark chocolate and creates a delicious contrast with rich blue-veined cheeses. For bolder pairings, it perfectly accompanies savoury dishes such as roast poultry served with a fruit sauce.
Serving and ageing
It is recommended to serve this port slightly chilled, at a temperature between 12 and 16°C, directly from the bottle without prior decanting. Before opening, the bottle should be stored upright in a cool place, away from light. Once uncorked, this Reserve Tawny Port can be kept in the refrigerator and enjoyed for about two months while retaining its brilliance and freshness.
The elegance and tradition of a great Port by Croft
The estate
Founded in 1588, Croft is the oldest of the original port-producing houses. Its historic cellars are located in Vila Nova de Gaia, while its grapes come from the Douro Valley. Today, this iconic brand belongs to the Taylor Fonseca group, under the leadership of Adrian Bridge. Renowned for its respect for tradition, the House stands out for its flagship estate, the Quinta da Roêda. It continues to produce Duriense wines of exceptional quality, combining a centuries-old heritage with a modern and sustainable approach.
The vineyard
The grapes used for this Port wine come from the upper Douro Valley, in north-eastern Portugal. This mountainous terroir is characterised by schist soils and varied microclimates depending on the altitude and the exposure of the plots. The House relies in particular on the Quinta da Roêda, considered the jewel of the region's wine estates, as well as on partnerships with carefully selected local growers to ensure the complexity of the grapes.
Vinification and ageing
The wines that make up this Reserve Tawny Port age in oak barrels for up to seven years. This long rest allows a gradual oxidation that develops the caramelised aromatic profile while preserving the freshness of the fruit. The final blend is made a few months before bottling in order to achieve perfect balance and great consistency.
The blend
This port comes from a blend of several reserve wines aged in wood, specifically selected for their soft and mellow character.
