The elegance and resilience of a grand cru from Echezeaux by Domaine A.F. Gros

    The estate

Founded in 1988 following the marriage of Anne-Françoise Gros and François Parent, Domaine A.F. Gros is an essential figure in Burgundy. Based in Pommard, the estate oversees a vineyard of ten to fifteen hectares spread across prestigious terroirs. Since 2013, the second generation, embodied by Caroline and Mathias Parent-Gros, has led the domaine. Awarded the title of Winemakers of the Year in 2023, they carry on a expertise combining environmental respect with an authentic expression of terroir, establishing Domaine A.F. Gros among the region's finest references.

    The vineyard

The Echezeaux appellation spans just over 36 hectares within the Côte de Nuits, bordering illustrious terroirs such as Clos de Vougeot and Chambolle-Musigny. The vines grow on a complex geological mosaic, made up of marly limestone resting on Bajocian limestone, mixed with gravel, red alluvium and yellowish marl. The domaine practises sustainable viticulture here, including regular ploughing and pheromone-based mating disruption to preserve biodiversity.

    The vintage

The year 2024 stood out for particularly challenging weather conditions. After hail episodes in May, June was marked by record rainfall, leading to coulure and shatter during flowering. Persistent humidity and mild temperatures favoured a virulent development of mildew until July. These climatic challenges resulted in small berries with fragile skins, requiring an unprecedented level of manual sorting.

    Winemaking and aging

The making of this Echezeaux Grand Cru Domaine 2024 favours a minimal-intervention approach to preserve the purity of the fruit. Vinification includes about 50% whole clusters, followed by a four-to-five-day cold maceration. Fermentation begins spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats. Extraction is gentle, with punching down limited to the end of maceration. Finally, the wine benefits from aging of around 18 months in oak barrels, a third of which are new.
