The estate
Founded in 1988 in Pommard by Anne-Françoise Gros, Domaine A.F. Gros is one of the most majestic labels in Burgundy.
Produced in limited quantities, the wines of Domaine A.F. Gros come mostly from the finest Burgundian terroirs, along with a plot in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation in Beaujolais. They are recognised worldwide as an authentic expression of Pinot Noir and Gamay.
Caroline and Mathias, two of the three children of Anne-Françoise Gros and François Parent, are now writing the next chapter of this exceptional estate. Constantly striving for excellence, Domaine A.F. Gros produces wines of rare elegance and great finesse.
The vineyard
Located in Beaujolais, the Moulin-à-Vent appellation covers nearly 700 hectares of vineyards. Domaine A.F Gros's Moulin-à-Vent comes from a single 3.8-hectare plot with a south-easterly exposure, planted on granitic and sandy soils. In the purest Burgundian tradition, the vineyard is farmed using sustainable viticulture.
The vintage
After a dry winter and spring, rain and hail during flowering caused coulure and a 10% loss of the crop. The summer was marked by two heatwaves. The combined effects of the early-season drought, the summer heat and the wind raised potential alcohol levels through concentration in the berries, while reducing the harvest by 40% compared with a normal year. Yet the quality is exceptional! Optimal health conditions in the vineyard and berries picked at full ripeness have produced a truly great 2019 vintage.
The wine
Moulin-à-Vent 2019 comes from the “En Mortperay” plot, acquired by Domaine A.F Gros in 2017, the year the Domaine produced its first vintage from this new appellation.
Vinification and ageing
Harvested by hand and brought back to the estate in refrigerated trucks, the grapes are sorted and then distributed as whole clusters into 3 vats, each playing a specific role in the estate's pursuit of qualitative excellence.
The wine is aged for 8 to 9 months, with around 50% of the harvest in 5,000-litre foudres and the remainder in 228-litre barrels previously used for 3 to 4 wines.
The wines are then racked and blended in stainless steel tanks for one month before bottling.
Since the 2018 vintage, the natural corks have been sealed exclusively with beeswax.
