    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Pommard 2023 Domaine A.F. Gros

    Tasting

    Colour
The colour reveals a deep, opaque ruby hue, adorned with subtle garnet nuances.

    Nose
The aromatic bouquet expresses a lovely intensity around red and black fruits such as cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant. Delicate floral touches of iris and violet intertwine with earthy notes of truffle, cedar and sweet spices.

    Palate
The palate offers a concentrated, juicy texture, supported by silky yet firm tannins. The mid-palate reveals a lovely depth with mineral and earthy nuances, stretching towards a long, persistent finish on berries with subtle herbaceous touches.

    Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs perfectly with full-flavoured meats such as roasted beef fillet, leg of lamb, or game such as duck or pheasant. It also goes wonderfully with coq au vin, mushroom and truffle dishes, as well as matured cheeses (Époisses, Langres, Comté or Beaufort).

    Service and storage

With its solid structure, this Pommard 2023 has excellent aging potential and can be cellared for around 10 to 20 years to reveal its full complexity.

The intensity and refinement of a great Pommard wine

    The estate

Founded in 1988 following the union of Anne-Françoise Gros and François Parent, Domaine A.F. Gros is a key reference in Burgundy. Based in Pommard with a winery in Beaune, the estate spans roughly fourteen hectares across the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and Beaujolais. Today, the second generation, represented by Caroline and Mathias Parent-Gros, runs the estate. Named winemakers of the year in 2023, they carry on a family expertise focused on the authentic expression of terroir, while incorporating sustainable practices and measured technical innovations.

    The vineyard

The vineyard of the Pommard appellation rests on rich clay-limestone soils, sometimes tinged with iron oxide depending on the plot. The estate cultivates its vines according to the principles of sustainable farming, favouring mechanical soil work through ploughing and excluding pesticides and insecticides. Plant health and respect for the ecosystem are at the heart of the winegrowing approach, complemented by exclusively hand-harvested grapes allowing for rigorous bunch sorting.

    The vintage

The year 2023 stood out for particularly hot and sunny weather conditions, even surpassing the temperatures of the previous year. Marked by periods of drought during crucial stages of the growing cycle, this demanding climate forced the vines to draw deeply from the soil. Despite yields being affected by this water stress, these conditions resulted in berries of exceptional ripeness, combining great concentration with an unexpected crisp freshness.

    Winemaking and aging

The making of this Pommard 2023 begins with a meticulous double sorting of the berries. A 4 to 5-day cold maceration is carried out with frequent pumping-over. Fermentation then takes place in tanks (stainless steel, concrete and wood) for 18 to 20 days, incorporating a proportion of whole clusters depending on the plot, with strict temperature control. Finally, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and aging in French oak barrels (around 65% new oak for the premier crus) for 12 to 18 months.
