Characteristics and tasting tips for La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole 2016 from Domaine François Lamarche
Tasting
Colour
This wine displays a deep ruby-red colour, typical of the great Pinot Noirs of its appellation.
Nose
Remarkably pure, the aromatic bouquet opens with vibrant notes of red fruit such as cherry and crushed strawberry, enhanced by original hints of citrus including blood orange and yuzu. With aeration, delicate floral nuances, sweet spices and undergrowth enrich this aromatic palette.
Palate
The palate offers a velvety texture supported by exceptionally fine tannins. There is a remarkable balance between the fruit's generosity and a lovely vibrancy. The tasting extends into a persistent finish, marked by chalky tension and a highly appealing salinity.
Food and wine pairings
This great red wine will pair beautifully with flavourful, delicate meats. It will elevate smoked duck, pigeon fillet with foie gras, or dishes that showcase wild mushrooms and root vegetables.
Serving and cellaring
Built for long cellar ageing, La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole 2016 will reveal its full complexity over the years and can be enjoyed until around 2038.
The elegance and purity of a Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru
The estate
Although the family's winemaking history dates back to the 18th century, the estate was truly founded in the early 20th century by Henri Lamarche. Located in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of Burgundy, Domaine François Lamarche covers around twelve hectares of prestigious terroirs. Run by François Lamarche from 1985, the estate is now in the hands of his daughter, Nicole Lamarche. Committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture, it crafts wines renowned for their finesse and precision, expressing all the grace of these legendary climats.
The vineyard
The La Grande Rue climat is an exceptional 1.65-hectare monopole, forming a narrow ribbon of vines on the slope. Ideally east-facing, it lies between legendary neighbours such as La Tâche and Romanée-Conti. The vines grow on brown clay-limestone soils, shallow at the top of the slope and richer towards the bottom. The high planting density and the topography demand meticulous manual work, carried out with the utmost respect for the environment.
The vintage
Unlike other parts of the appellation, the vines for this cuvée were fortunate enough to be spared the spring frosts that struck the region. These favourable weather conditions allowed the vines to complete a full, untroubled growing cycle, resulting in optimal and even ripening of the berries.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand at full ripeness. In the cellar, vinification is carried out with great precision to favour elegance. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new wood, for 16 to 20 months. Finally, it is bottled without filtration.
Grape variety
Pinot Noir (100%).
