    Robert Parker Wine Advocate

    William Kelley

Over the last five years, as these high-density plantings (which date to 2014) have matured, this cuvée has made the most progress of any wine in the range, and the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées only confirms that. Unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, sweet citrus oil, toasted hazelnuts, white flowers and iodine, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and textural, with a cool core of fruit, racy acids and a long, mineral finish.

    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Chaumées" 2022 Domaine Hubert Lamy

    Tasting

    Colour
Beautifully limpid, this white wine reveals a bright, luminous hue.

    Nose
Restrained yet wonderfully complex, the bouquet unveils aromas of green apple, Conference pear and citrus zest. Delicate floral notes intertwine with a pronounced minerality, reflecting its limestone terroir.

    Palate
Elegant and remarkably refined, the palate offers a precise texture underpinned by a lovely acidic backbone. Medium-bodied, it reveals a stony minerality that carries the wine through to a long finish marked by superb saline notes.

    Food and Wine Pairing

This structured white wine will pair wonderfully with delicate poultry in a creamy sauce, veal in an elegant sauce, or shellfish such as crab and lobster. It will also enhance fish dishes seasoned with mild Asian spices (ginger, white pepper) or vegetarian dishes showcasing asparagus, artichoke and roasted root vegetables.

    Service and Storage

While it can be enjoyed young for its mineral tension, this Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Chaumées" 2022 will reveal its full complexity after a few years in the cellar. It can be kept and enjoyed until around 2034.

The Mineral Precision of a Chassagne-Montrachet with Character

    The Estate

Founded in 1973 by Hubert Lamy from eight hectares of vines, Domaine Hubert Lamy is today a renowned producer in Burgundy. Although the family's winemaking history dates back to 1640, it was under the impetus of his son, Olivier Lamy, who has run the estate since 1996, that the domaine took on a new dimension. Supported by his wife Karine since 2005, he oversees a vineyard spanning 18.5 hectares. The estate stands out for its sustainable practices and its experiments with very high-density planting.

    The Vineyard

The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Chaumées" plot covers a tiny area of 0.23 hectares. Located at the northern edge of the appellation, bordering Saint-Aubin, the vines were planted in two stages, in 1970 and 1989. Sitting mid-slope on shallow soils composed of clay and hard limestone rock, this highly draining terroir benefits from an east-facing exposure. This orientation allows the grapes to ripen gently while preserving lovely natural acidity thanks to the coolness of the afternoons.

    The Vintage

The year 2022 put the vineyard to the test with episodes of frost, hail in some areas and heavy mildew pressure. However, the altitude of the plots and meticulous manual work on the foliage helped preserve the grapes' health. While yields were affected, the berries gained in concentration. The return of very favourable weather in September ultimately provided optimal ripening conditions ahead of the harvest.

    Winemaking and Aging

The grapes destined for this Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Chaumées" 2022 are hand-harvested in small crates. They then undergo a long, gentle whole-cluster pneumatic pressing lasting around two and a half hours. After a natural overnight settling period in stainless steel tanks, fermentation begins thanks to indigenous yeasts in 300- and 600-litre barrels, about 25% of which are new oak. Aging continues for a total of 24 months, first in barrels on fine lees with gentle stirring, then in tank, thereby preserving the wine's full purity.

    Grape Variety

    Chardonnay (100%).
