Originating from soils where a mere 20 centimeters of red clay overlies the limestone and from vines planted in 1988, the 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles rises from the glass with aromas of yellow apple, orange oil and beeswax. Medium- to full-bodied, it is broad and textural on the palate, with succulent acidity, exhibiting slightly less cut than Lamy’s Saint-Aubin bottlings.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Les Macherelles" 2023 Domaine Hubert Lamy

    Tasting

    Colour
The colour reveals a brilliant golden hue, subtly tinged with green highlights in its youth.

    Nose
Remarkably complex, the nose exudes aromas of white flowers, acacia and honeysuckle. It then opens onto notes of white and yellow fruits, enriched by delicate pastry touches and a minerality reminiscent of chalk and flint.

    Palate
Underpinned by vibrant acidity, the palate seduces with its silky, refined texture. The profound expression of the limestone terroir brings great mineral purity, stretching into a lingering finish with white fruit flavours.

    Food and wine pairing

This great white wine pairs wonderfully with seafood such as oysters, langoustines or grilled lobster. It also elevates grilled lean fish, herb-roasted poultry, as well as characterful cheeses like Époisses or Roquefort.

    The estate

Founded in 1973, Domaine Hubert Lamy is located at the heart of Saint-Aubin, in Burgundy. Although the family's winemaking history dates back to 1640, it was under Hubert's leadership that the modern estate came into being. Today, the domaine is brilliantly run by his son, Olivier Lamy, and his wife Karine. Spanning 18.5 hectares, this vineyard is renowned for its innovative approach, particularly its very high-density plantings. A true ambassador of its appellation, Domaine Hubert Lamy crafts wines of remarkable precision, faithfully reflecting the richness of Burgundian terroirs.

    The vineyard

Originating from a tiny 0.16-hectare plot planted in 1988, this cuvée comes from the terroir of Chassagne-Montrachet. Located to the northeast of the village, on a mid-slope with a due-east exposure, the vines thrive on soils composed of a thin layer of red clay resting on a substrate of hard limestone. The estate practises sustainable, meticulous viticulture here, encouraging deep rooting to extract the full mineral quintessence of this exceptional terroir.

    Winemaking and aging

The grapes for the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Les Macherelles" 2023 are hand-harvested with rigorous sorting. After gentle pressing, the juices settle naturally overnight. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts. Aging then takes place on fine lees for around 24 months in 300- and 600-litre barrels, mostly used ones, to preserve the identity of the terroir. The wine finally undergoes an additional six months of refinement in tank before bottling.

    Grape variety

    100% Chardonnay.
