The 2023 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes, which Merlin described as the flagship of the house, has a crisp, stony, citrus-fresh nose with light lemony notes. The palate has quite a strict entry, a keen line of acidity and a light, peppery but persistent finish. Enjoy over four to five years.

    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Mâcon La Roche Vineuse "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 Domaine Merlin

    Tasting Notes

    Colour
This white wine reveals a deep golden yellow colour.

    Nose
The aromatic bouquet expresses a lovely mineral freshness, blending aromas of white fruits such as peach and pear with notes of citrus and flowers. Subtle touches of vanilla round out the whole.

    Palate
The attack shows great finesse, opening onto a full, rich and complex mid-palate. There is a remarkable balance between the fruit, the mineral structure and the delicate oak. The long, lingering finish stands out with a peppery edge that brings plenty of vivacity.

    Food and wine pairing

Thanks to its balanced profile, this wine pairs perfectly with seafood such as lobster or scallops, as well as grilled fish. It is also a wonderful match for poultry in creamy sauces, light vegetarian dishes and fresh cheeses.

    Service and storage

To fully appreciate this wine from Burgundy, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 11 and 12°C. This wine has fine aging potential, allowing it to evolve favourably over the years.

    The estate

Founded in 1987 by Olivier and Corinne Merlin, Domaine Merlin is located in La Roche-Vineuse, in the south of Burgundy. Today, the founders still run the estate, joined by their sons Paul and Théo, who bring a fresh perspective. The estate stands out for its artisanal philosophy, treating every vine as a living being. This low-intervention approach, respectful of the soil and biodiversity, results in authentic wines that faithfully reflect the richness of their terroirs.

    The vineyard

The plot dedicated to this cuvée lies within the Mâcon-La Roche-Vineuse appellation. Facing south and southwest, the vines benefit from optimal sun exposure. These old vines are rooted in complex soils made up of clay-limestone marl. The vineyard is farmed with an emphasis on manual soil work and natural cover cropping.

    Winemaking and aging

The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates, then carefully sorted. Winemaking begins with whole-bunch direct pressing, followed by light settling. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels. The wine then undergoes extended aging in barrels, followed by a period in tanks.

    Grape variety

    Chardonnay (100%).
