    Tasting

    Appearance
    The wine displays a pale yellow hue with bright highlights.

    Nose
    The nose opens with intense floral aromas alongside notes of white fruit. Scents of citrus, white peach and crushed stone emerge, while hints of toasted hazelnut, green apple and citrus fruit complete this bouquet of remarkable purity.

    Palate
    On the palate, this wine reveals a remarkable balance and lovely freshness. Tension and spicy precision define the mid-palate, with a mineral, lively style typical of a top-quality Aligoté. The body is medium, the definition precise, with no heaviness. The finish is very long, marked by increasing minerality and a saline touch that reflects the limestone terroir.

    Food and wine pairings

    This Morey-Saint-Denis 1er cru "Clos des Monts Luisants" 2016 pairs perfectly with oily fish such as salmon, mackerel or tuna. It also elegantly accompanies œufs en meurette, aged goat’s cheeses or Comté. Excellent as an aperitif, it also goes very well with seafood salads and delicate white fish preparations.

    Serving and cellaring

    The Morey-Saint-Denis 1er cru "Clos des Monts Luisants" 2016 is ideally served at a temperature between 10 and 12°C. Opening it 30 to 45 minutes before serving allows the wine to fully express itself. This wine offers cellaring potential of 10 to 20 years, during which its mineral complexity will continue to develop.

    A unique Burgundian Premier Cru from century-old Aligoté vines

    The estate

    Founded in 1872 by William Ponsot in Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Ponsot is among the most prestigious estates in Burgundy. Since 2017, Rose-Marie Ponsot has been leading the family estate, supported by technical director Alexandre Abel. The estate oversees around eleven hectares of vines, more than eighty percent of which are Grand Cru and Premier Cru. A pioneer of estate bottling as early as 1934, Domaine Ponsot stands out for its minimalist winemaking philosophy and its refusal to use new oak barrels. The family has also played a decisive role in the fight against wine counterfeiting and in the adoption of innovative authentication technologies.

    The vineyard

    Clos des Monts Luisants is located in Morey-Saint-Denis, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits. This vineyard of just under one hectare lies on poor clay-limestone soils with chalky scree over a base of white oolite and Dijon-Corton limestone. The Aligoté vines, planted in 1911, account for around 80% of the vineyard, with the remainder replanted in 2006. These century-old vines develop deep root systems that draw complexity from this distinctive limestone terroir. The estate practices sustainable viticulture without insecticides or pesticides, with some plowing carried out by horse. Yields are strictly controlled at around 35 hectoliters per hectare.

    The vintage

    The 2016 vintage proved particularly challenging in Burgundy. After a mild winter, a devastating frost struck the vines on April 27. Morey-Saint-Denis benefited from relative protection thanks to a light morning cloud cover. June was marked by cool temperatures and frequent rainfall, creating heavy downy mildew pressure. August brought stable, warm weather, allowing gradual ripening. Welcome rain on September 5 relieved vine water stress. Harvest took place between late September and early October, around a month later than in 2015. Despite these challenges, the white wines reached remarkable quality with fine natural acidity.

    Winemaking and aging

    The grapes for the Morey-Saint-Denis 1er cru "Clos des Monts Luisants" 2016 are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness in small wicker baskets. Whole clusters are pressed directly without crushing. Fermentation begins in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts before continuing in French oak barrels. Aging takes place for around sixteen months in barrels with an average age of fifteen years, with no new oak used. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, and sulfur use remains minimal, only if necessary.
